There's a huge difference with helping out in midfield with specific instructions and just running around the pitch doing what you like. It's one of my biggest criticisms of Rooney. He plays like a kid in a field who just wants the ball.

He will drop but when do we ever control the midfield with him there, we don't because Rooney isn't working as an extra midfielder.

that's actually a fair assessment. And one i would agree with in the main.

having a good midfield doesn't necessarily bode well for Wayne in the way some argue for me

I like Henderson - or rather i have an nascent appreciation for his development in that past 12 months- but in this climate, i won't have him as a starter on saturday. But i will bring him on as a sub

He can track back but when it comes to following specific defensive duties he isn't the best.

ageed, I dont think rooney is good at following any specific duties.during the last WC rooney spend high percentage of the match behind both gerrard and Lampard. I dont think that was part of any tactical game plan

in order to get the best out of him, Roy has to play him as a striker and give him strict instructions to stay up top. If he cant do that roy has to play him out wide or drop him imo.

I missed the Honduras game, did Wilshere look fit? He was poor in the Equador game I watched, really lacked that match fitness although I was also confused with his role, neither him or Lampard are deep lying midfielders and neither seemed to want to play it.

didnt watch it 1982, Wilshere probably be unfit and Lampard would have been useless I guess. 2 most useless players in the squad

All this stuff is showing how overrated Rooney is. Rooney can be a great player and I still rate him as England's best player overall, but the way people like Beckham, Del Piero and Pele are coming out and talking about him is too much, and unwarranted. He is not that good that he's our star player by a clear distance, so stop treating him as such.
