Crossroads

Every summer for every club fans around the country say 'this is a really big summer, we need this and that or this and that will happen'.

For most it's never as vital as fans make out, some current players surprise them, some new kid emerges, a dud signing comes good.

For Liverpool this summer really does feel vital.

The manager has had 3 years to bed his 'philosophy' with little tangible to show for it.

A lot of money has been spent and nowhere near enough of it spent wisely.

We are probably one bad season away from fans starting to turn against FSG and their methods on a grander scale (rightly or wrongly) and Rodgers won't survive another flop season.

We have lost a lot of experience and character from the squad, and of course our iconic captain.

Nobody can say with any certainty exactly where we are going at the moment.

On the one hand we have the bulk of a talented young squad (and manager) who could improve together, become the characters, and with a little tweaking lead us to success over the next few years.

On the other hand we have a disjointed style, a questionable transfer policy, no leaders and a manager with little track record of success.

It all depends on whether you are glass half full or half empty I suppose.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to be half full at the moment though, with contract wrangles and woeful signings leaving a cloud across the club.

Whatever happens I think Summer 2015 will be pivotal one way or the other.

Another season like this one and the turmoil will only increase.

Whilst I agree Paul there is a certain validity in the net spend argument. He did try and get better players and it's all about players.

Of the four clubs above us which ones should we be above and why?

Probably none in fairness
I thought taking Balotelli rather than the available Bony was poor judgement

Balotelli was a huge mistake.

But then Özil was a mistake, Torres was a mistake, Falcao was a mistake. All club make cøck ups.

Also I have the cream song crossroads in my head because of this article

I think we should (or could) be above Man Utd.

They had dozens of injuries early season and have been very average.

Their budget is irrelevant when those expensive players (on the whole) haven't been particularly good.

Their key players have been De Gea, Carrick, Young and Fellaini, all of whom joined before last summer, long before in most cases.

I think regardless of the results we have had this year we will be fine in the longterm.

You said there will be a Hicks and Gillett backlash which you will never know unless you are a fortune teller and know the future.

The owners have done right. They have backed the managers we had the last few years. They have started the redevolpment of the stadium.
They have increased our commercial activities.

Our revenue streams will increase more so we will offer more wages in the future.

Over a season yes but still at times individuals of great quality won them points.

Take the two Utd games against us. De Gea and Rooney won the first. Mata and ADM the second. Players that would walk into our team have made the difference.

I think it's fair to say that this summer could well be a crossroads for Brendan Rodgers.

I believe he deserves a chance to get it right in the summer. If we finish 5th (we may not), then this isn't a good enough reason to ditch him given the financial muscle of the clubs above us.

However, if we continue to falter and we fail to bring in the quality players we need, then I expect him to have gone this time next year.

Sacking him now would be a knee jerk decision imo. The recruitment process needs to be addressed. I find it difficult to accept that it the managers profile that is holding us back in the market It maybe a factor, but a minimal one. My guess is that incentive based contracts are a bigger reason why we struggle to attract players with a higher profile.

Ian Ayre needs looking at as much as Rodgers I feel.

I'm really not looking forward to this summer

we'll target the right players, they'll laugh at us and tell us foookoff, then we'll gamble on a nutcase or buy 'average' for too much money, then all hell will break loose.

Just like every year recently

Ian Ayre has done wonders for our club commercially. He should be managing director still but there still should be another person dealing with transfers.
