To be fair, 'Dundee United' is slang in Nigeria for a fool or idiot.

I stumbled on this tweet last night by someone who is followed by Barack Obama:

"You probably want to set standard of governance as one of the leading parties, yet u put up a known Dundee United to lead a state...just becos they have money to acquire the position. The problem of Nigeria is in-built, even if u do factory reset everyday...it'll still be there."

Didn't this become a common phrase in Nigeria after Dundee Utd lost 3-0 to Roma in 1984 European Cup semi, after winning 2-0 in 1st leg?

Seems harsh but I am willing to go along with it, to paraphrase The Day Today

Various theories about when it came in.

The Guardian reported that it came in because of an ill-fated tour to Nigeria in the 70s.

I had heard it was due to our run to the UEFA Cup final then blowing it.

Nevertheless, it's real
