The Champions League returns for us tomorrow. Now, whilst I expect we're going to be knocked out this round or next does anyone here think we have even a puncher's chance of lifting the trophy in May? For this to happen I think we'd need the following:
De Gea to continue his fine shot stopping form
Maguire to recapture some of his form from last season/England form
Shaw - see Maguire
Fred and McT to play highly disciplined football and keeping the ball as well as possible.
Pogba to be at his creative best.
Bruno to make his chances count.
Ronaldo to show he's still got it in the CL.
Funnily enough when we play the better teams in the CL (starting tomorrow) I don't think De Gea staying on his line or Maguire's often criticised lack of pace will be as much of an issue as I'd imagine us defending deep and blocking the spaces.
Does anyone see any chance at all for us or are we just there to make up the numbers? If you think there's a chance outline why.
A Puncher's Chance

United have beaten West Ham twice this season in the PL whilst Liverpool lost against them so that makes us better then I suppose.

Goodness me mate. If you cant see the difference in being totally outplayed numerous times by opposition on paper inferior to you, to what youve just stated I cant help you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree we were badly beaten against you, City (and Watford!) and the likelihood is that City and LFC would beat us again. The point is though it's not a foregone conclusion hence the OP.
KLS - I am taking it a game at a time. We may only get two! I know we're unlikely to get close to winning it in reality but we're no worse than LFC were in 2005 for example. They finished miles behind Chelsea that season but brought something special to the CL.

Fully agree, we were sh!te 2005 but rode our luck and won it.

We have no chance what so ever of lifting the trophy but there is no reason why we can not go through to the next round.
The dips, City and PSG are the three teams I don’t think we can beat but don’t really fear anyone else and that includes Bayern.

The nucleus of the real quality players (Cavani, Fernandes, Fred, Maguire, Pogba, Ronaldo, Sancho and Shaw) is a bit meagre relative to United's previous squads - but worst squads have won the damn thing in seasons gone by.
It really depends on how the other deadbeats avoid being deadbeats for the dream to happen. But it's a cup competition anything can, and will probably, happen.

You did bit Leverkusen, Juve and Chelsea to get to the final to be fair. Hardly gimmes. You just massively upped your game in the CL that season.

I'll savour every game we play in the CL, that's for sure. Never know when we'll next be in it.

This is very true! Let's hope we give it 100% this week and see where it takes us.

I expect you to get past a pretty average Atleti but they did play well for 30 mins against us before they went down to 10. They are capable of bursts of quality in games and with Simeone they have a manager who knows how to win these two legged games.
I'm personally looking forward to sitting back and watching the inevitable fireworks across the 2 legs that hopefully results in a Luis Suarez winning goal in the 93rd minute.

in the season when you won the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ancient history, a favourite topic of the modern United fan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
so the season when you won the league is "ancient history"?
suits me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you agree that season is history then your last league win is a fossil, and United been crap for eon. Suits me too.
