Electric cars

Has anyone on here transitioned to an electric car? I was planning to in 2-3 years but the rising costs of fuel just pushed that idea forward for me and I am looking for the VW ID3 at the moment since it’s very popular right now and doesn’t look much like a spaceship like most electric cars.

So far I’ve been quoted £300 a month for a brand new one that doesn’t deliver until December and a second hand one for £320 a month (crazy I know). At the moment I’m paying £262 a month for my petrol car and I’m really tempted to move over at those prices.

I’m currently paying almost £80 a month on average for fuel and the tax on my car is about £160 a year so if you cut those costs out with an electric car it does work out cheaper for me in the long run.

One thing I’ve noted recently that annoys me about EVs is saturation of market with SUV style cars and very few options for a small car. There are NO options for a small , cheapish 2 door sports car or hatchback. All EV (and hybrid) sports cars or luxury items, basically.

Renault Zoe, Peugeot e208, E-Golf are literally examples of small to mid size hatchback EV’s

ID3 as well. My issue with new electric cars is they all look pretty terrible. I don’t want to drive something that is trying to look like a spaceship.

ID3 is the only electric car that looks half attractive for me. The new EV Peugeot’s don’t look to bad either tbh

The new Mercedes EQ looks lovely too but definitely way out of most peoples price range.

Yeah I sat in one recently looks ok but inside it’s rubbish all cheap and nasty. I’m sticking with the eGolf and I don’t know why they’re trying to replace that classic model with the ID3.

VW Group cars are notoriously known to be all cheap inside with their materials, not much soft materials used. Audi is the same. Given that VW was caught out with the diesel scandal and the money they had to fork out its no surprise they are finding ways to cost cut.

There was one specific criteria in there it didn't meet, hatchback wasn't it.

I saw it but mini’s are awesome and reaffirm one’s heterosexuality. In my experience women love when a man rocks up in one. It’s like a reverse ‘man has big car to make up for a small peen’ syndrome. The woman then gets fascinated about what size schlooong is hiding in those trousers.

Interesting discussion all round.

A lot of answers that reveal our how our mind frames are stuck in a paradigm of consumption that I do not personally feel is compatible with reversing the massive environmental problem we have on our hands, if indeed it is still reversible. The best we can probably do at this stage is dampen the impact of global warming rather than reverse it, but we're still a long way off from that. Rosso and Barry I think are the only two posters who seem not only to see it this way, but prepared too to go the extra mile. I see it this way, but don't have the willpower to make enough of the lifestyle changes I'd need to in order to be consistent with my views.

Robb, what women love is the idea that there's a man they can take out shopping and talk girly problems with. All of which is fine, but most of the schlooong thoughts will be from blokes who'd like to ram you with theirs.

Prefer the ioniq 5 to the ID3.

Yeah, as said, very few options, at least compared to the amount of SUVs on market. Same with hybrid cars. Need some small sized two door coupes, there’s no electric/hybrid equivalent I’m aware of to an Audi TT or Mazda MX5, for example.
