Fwiw, I don't think Trump is a cause as much as he is a consequence ... a consequence of the increasing polarisation whose actual source is the algorithms used by social and other online media. There's been quite a lot of research into this.

As for what moves Republicans and Democrats, and even though I'd generally consider myself considerably further left of the Democrat side of the spectrum, there's also been some interesting research into how each person's worldview is shaped and determined.

There's a good TED talk out there by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt that's quite revealing. I don't know to what extent it can be considered gospel, but imo it's well worth a watch if you can spare the time:

The loony conspiracy theories have started from the OAN/Fox news idiots. They’re asking how he afforded these guns and implying that his therapist was a hypnotist specialist who ‘programmed’ him to do this to bring in gun control and make it easier for the tyrannical government to swoop in and bring in a Chinese style social credit system.

What is the bigotry here? IQ studies were done all over the country and Republicans came out around 7 points 'dumber' than Dems.

Not a great surprise really given the republicans are generally less educated and come from backwaters and the countryside.

Clearly, this type of reaction is inevitable and would have been potentially lethal too if he'd brandished a banana or other piece of fruit instead of a (legally-acquired?) assault rifle.

Nothing will bridge the divide because it has become entrenched.

Pointing out that voting Brexit was stupid is a valid thing to do. People were told that Brexit would cost them money, and they dismissed it as project fear. Even now that it has done and people are actually struggling they won't accept thay Brexit has any part,or even that it was worth it "to get our country back" when they don't actually have any clue what they mean by that.
