After the match the other night I saw plenty of people stating the Dutchman shouldn't be in the conversation for the best CB in the PL era. I do think that is slightly harsh on VVD as he's a top player but that assertion was countered by "Well Torres always terrorised Vidic".
To be fair the stats don't lie though and Torres with his 3 goals in 15 games against Vidic certainly did that. However, that does mean we now have to discuss how terrified VVD is of Rashford who has 4 in 7 against him. Hopefully this will be trotted out every United v Liverpool game.
Vidic v Van Dijk

Van Dyke is now past his prime at 31, and he had a bad knee injury that he will start to feel more as he ages. He has noticeably lost some pace also. He was top class for a few years, but those days are slipping away now.

Torres with his 3 goals in 15 games against Vidic certainly did that.
----------
At Liverpool he had 3 goals in 6 games v Vidic
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So not 3 in 15, what a shiiiitshow of an article
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well it is 3 in 15 in total.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
15?
Torres was only with us for 4 years
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He did play for Chelsea against United as well.

You're not counting that surely. He was well past his best when we sold him - and you know it!

He’s their centre half,
He’s their number 4,
Watch him stand still as Sancho scores.
Martial turns him,
Easy as you like,
He’s Virgil Van Dijk, Virgil Van Dijk

Why not? But even with Torres 3 in 6 v Vidic it still isn't as good as Rashford's 4 in 7 (OP changed to reflect my initial mistake) v Liverpool (with Van Dijk playing) and Rashford's 5 in 9 overall record against him.

So with these great stats in mind, and with a dashing of pettiness, which way do we want to look at it these figures?
Vidic > VVD?
Or..
Rashford > Torres?

Fantastic player but too soon be declaring him the Prem’s best ever, with the quality of player that has gone before him.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in form - and some Liverpool fans in particular have been guilty of that - but I think sometimes you can only really gauge this when a player has moved on or retired.
With some obvious exceptions, of course.

As a fan of a back 4 I haven't seen a better (more effective) partnership than Bruce and Pallister. Not the greatest individually but solid as a pairing with a mutual understanding. A good back 4 provides the base for everything in front and those two also scored vital goals at set pieces. One good centre-back doesn't make a defence.
