Better Call Saul Vs Breaking Bad

Which one is better?

(Probably will be better call Saul spoilers here if you haven't seen it)

There's not too much point discussing if you've only seen one or the other or even just one and then one half way through. Both shows become far better by season 3 onwards respectively.

I finally convinced my wife after years of sometimes mentioning both shows that she needs to watch BB. So she did, and then she watched that El Camino, and now she's up to BCS S6 ep 3

She absolutely loves Breaking Bad after sticking with it, but now trying again with BCS she's actually thinking BCS is better than BB

I did a Google search "better call Saul Vs BB which is better" and I'm actually seeing the majority of commenters saying they find BCS to be better than BB.

Example when searching for opinions (and yes Ive read more than just the comments from the link below) :

BB considered to be the greatest TV show of all time by many, but considered not to be as good as BCS by those who have watched both?

My opinion is that as the seasons go on, it becomes more and more like we're just watching Breaking bad and how everything falls into place before Walter steps in. Yet it still sticks to the importance of Kim's and Jim's relationship.

Yes the first two seasons start off slow, but his relationship to his irritating brother Chuck is how we understand why Jim becomes Saul. The character building to start off, understanding the relationships, understanding how Jimmy decides to become Saul, it's better than the character building in BB.

Season 3 onwards and watching Gus v Salamanca, Jimmy always seeing himself as being the underdog and therefore scamming and getting involved in 'the game', it's TV that's pretty much art.

I think with BB, it's amazing one of the greatest, but the difference is its a lot more action packed and tense than BCS is. Because of that though when something shocking happens in BCS it hits the viewer harder.

For me it's hard to say which show is better. But if you've seen Breaking Bad and love it, you must stick with BCS and get through the first two seasons if you're finding them slow. It becomes far more intense and close to BB by season 3.

Which do you think is better?

And yes I'm posting this on the United 606 board because like the greatness of BB and BCS, I consider the United board to be the greatest ja606 board in history and on earth

I gave BCS a season and had no desire to watch the rest. Everyone keeps telling me to stick with it, but nah, it didn't do enough for me. I understand it gets better though.

It’s definitely not as good as BB, but nonetheless it definitely is worth sticking with. It’s more of a slow burn than BB, you get to see the evolution of Jimmy the ethical nice guy to Saul the crooked lawyer, as well as the full origin story of Gustavo and Mike etc. and the last half season offers some extra closure to the BB universe as it’s set after the events of the final episode of BB. Compare it to BB and it’ll always be unfavorable, but view it in its own right and it’s pretty decent.

Ever sine Pinkman told Heisenberg 'You don't want a criminal lawyer... you want a "criminal" lawyer'

Saul Goodman became pretty much a 'cult character' and a major protaganist in the Breaking Bad story.

Heard great things about BCS but there’s no way I’m sitting through 150 episodes of any series.

Tbh you could skip the first 3.5 seasons of BCS and you wouldn’t miss much.

Pretty much every episode of BB felt important

BB was the OG, each episode had meaning behind it. It had criticism of being slow, but BCS was slower. But that’s not a bad thing, it actually fit in with the theme of the show overall. I can only recall on ‘weak’ episode of BB and that was the fly one but on a technical level that was so well done.
I think overall both are on par with each other. BCS feels more niche but BB is the daddy.

This is only true if you need a show to be driven by a plot full of danger to sustain your interest. BCS is much more driven by character development, and if you tune into that, there's plenty going on. I found it gripping from the first season.

I've rewatched both BB and BCS in their entirety. Both are great, but BCS is more satisfying second time around because it has more layers to it. And Gilligan is all the more skilled and assured as a storyteller after all the experiments he tried out in BB. He's so good and setting out little puzzle pieces at the start of an episode and putting them together by the end. It's a technique he starts to use in BB but does better in BCS.

I do love BCS but BB is better. I think Walt and Jesse delving gradually deeper into the meth business and criminal world is more gripping to me than Jimmy becoming Saul and his relationship with his brother, although when BCS is at his highest it really isn't far off BB at its highest.

BB comfortably

BCS was a consistent 7/10
BB had higher numbers on the regular
