United 2023 squad most expensive in history

Manchester United's squad last year were the "most expensive ever assembled" in football, says a Uefa report.

The European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report says United's players at the end of their 2023 financial year cost 1.42bn euros (£1.21bn) in combined transfer fees.

The 2020 Real Madrid squad were previously the most costly at £1.13bn.

United's squad included £82m Antony, £80m Harry Maguire, £73m Jadon Sancho and £70m Casemiro.

The total does not include £72m Rasmus Hojlund, £55m Mason Mount or £47m Andre Onana, all of whom joined in the 2023 summer transfer window.

United finished third in the Premier League last season, their first campaign under manager Erik ten Hag.

The reports says three other squads - Manchester City, Chelsea and Real - cost more than £1bn in transfer fees.

Chelsea's figures go up to June 2022, meaning the £850m they spent from the summer of that year to August 2023 is not counted.

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe's deal to buy a 25% stake in United was approved by the Football Association on Wednesday.

The purchase is worth about £1.03bn and his Ineos Group will take control of football operations.

================================

We are all fully aware that we have wasted a lot of money as a club. But this really highlights just how poorly we have done with our recruitment in recent years. We really ought to be at least competing for the top prizes with the money we have spent.

Positive signs so far that Jim has got a plan in place to improve things in this area moving forwards. Fingers crossed it actually works.

And yet people will still defend the Glazer’s ownership.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would generally say that people who defend the Glazer's ownership are the people who have no clue about how anything in life works whatsoever.

As in, i can guarantee you there are people reading this BBC article thinking 'Look at how much money the Glazers have spent! What are they complaining about?'
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst they haven't invested in the stadium and training facilities etc, they have provided the funds that should have kept us competitive on the pitch. Unfortunately they have employed people incapable of making the right signings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The club have spent millions maintaining the stadium and training ground over the years.

God knows why the roof was left to leak though.

The scariest thing for me when looking at utd and money spent is always that utd were so far ahead to even begin with, they shouldnt have needed to spend much at all
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Far ahead in terms of spending?

That is no surprise either. If you’re doing the wrong things operationally & strategically, throwing more money at it with the exact same approach isn’t going to produce different results typically.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No In terms of set up, status, winning mentality, big stadium, income etc. Utd through the 90s put themselves in such a dominant position it's crazy to me they are the top spenders since then.

On another note, I have just had an alert from the club website saying fans have wondered about the return of Malacia.

No they bloody well have not. No one has.

Indeed cannot see anything about him that makes me want to see him again? At best? mediocre and perhaps that's a reach

I have never forgiven him for the miss last year that should have put us 3-0 up against Sevilla followed by the bad defending for their first followed by Martinez getting injured and carried off. All in the space of about five minutes.

You'll only hold that record for a year.
Chelsea will be the most expensive next year.

Absolutely obscene.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s actually disgusting when viewed to how much food could be done with that money outside football.

I really hope the football bubble explodes and these sorts of figures are never seen again.

Interested to see if we can mug teams by selling high and buying low now instead of the other way round.
