England have the best attacking lineup in world football at the moment with Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Foden. Still not sure about the more defensive roles despite Rice being one of the best in his position. Would still say it's the best generation England's had since the mid 00's. What's contributed to England's stature is the decline of so many historically strong teams. Other than Portuguese football which is seeing a resurgence, can't think of any of the big teams which aren't a shadow of their golden eras.

France are still in their golden era.

France lack creativity and technical quality. They seem to only produce defenders and midfield runners these days, with Griezmann the wrong side of 30. The likes of Dembele and Coman never quite developed as many expected. They're calling up mediocre players like Moussa Diaby, and Giroud is still a regular. And their manager is more boring than Southgate. I'd hardly say they're in a golden era.

They were a penalty shootout away from retaining the world cup.

I'm talking about squads here and not who has had the best results. Portugal won the Euros in 2016 with a far worse squad than they'd had for most of the last 2+ decades. The best French squad of my lifetime were eliminated in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup.

I mean, when people refer to the England "Golden Generation", they are referring to the fact England had players like Rooney, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Ashley Cole, Ferdinand etc, and not referring to what England won.

Doesn’t that all just demonstrate that the Golden Generation tag really comes to fruition?

But Portugal was a fluke. France have had the best squads in international football for years, and have had results that reflect it. Their squad may not be as good as it was in 2018, but I’d still say they’re in their golden era under Dechamps.
