England Squad

Personally,

Glad to see Gordon and Palmer in, but surprised to see Rashford.

Gomez is understandable and I think it’s wise to have a look at Branthwaite.

No Phillips (is he injured?) and Hendo squeezing himself in again. Not sure how I feel about that but he’s a top pro and very experienced in a position with little to no competition at international level.

Surprised we named a 25 man squad, and that only five of them are midfielders, but I guess Southgate must want to have a look at more of the players on the fringes. Looks about right considering who is available, though I’m a bit disappointed that Barkley didn’t get a call up. I think he could offer us quite a bit now he’s playing as a cm.

Yeah I think he deserved a look in, and already has a good amount of International experience.

Those deeper central areas are a real problem for us, especially if Bellingham does play further forward. It’d be risky going into a tournament with Henderson, Rice and possibly Phillips as the only players that play there.

Big shame Jones isn't fit because he'd perfect playing in the role alongside Rice.

Not sure who else is even available to do it. Mainoo maybe but probably a bit early for him?

It’s a bigger problem than it needed be because of Southgate’s absurd decision to keep picking Henderson and Phillips.

There’s no justification for it and he could have been bringing alternatives through by now.

This is the issue. And I’m not sure Jones is perfect as he doesn’t play in that role for Liverpool either.

He has played a bit deeper a times this season, especially when Mac Allister was playing as the DM, and has largely played as a more traditional box to box CM.

Although I was assuming Southgate gives the CM alongside Rice a bit more license to get forward, which is probably a mistake

TAA could come in alongside Rice.

And if Safegate put his big boy pants on and was brave, he could have developed a city like system where Stones steps in to CM, Walker provides the pace cover across the back, the left back is a bit more reserved/less attacking, to maintain defensive numbers . Then whoever starts alongside Rice is then able to be further forward and you could possibly have Foden & Bellingham as 2 CM ahead of Rice.

It would be beyond difficult to coach an inverted role at international level I feel.

Also, Southgate (or any international manager) is not of the same quality as Pep and Klopp.

There is a lack of DMs for England full stop, plus Trent has never really performed in an England shirt.

Not sure what Rashford and Henderson are doing in there, but I guess they won't be expected to get minutes come the Euros.

The defence and goalkeepers are a poor set of options. It depends on how Southgate wants to setup though, a back 4 means we'd likely press higher up the pitch, so:
Shaw (if fit) Stones Braithwaite Walker

A back 5 and sitting a bit deeper brings out the best in the likes of Maguire and Dunk. However you look at it, we will have a weak point at the back.

For the roles they actually play for England not really. And even if they are it’s not such an improvement that it addresses the problem.

But he’s not really playing as a central midfielder where he is expected to sit alongside a dm like Rice, which is often how we’ll set the midfield up. It’s less of an issue if Bellingham is going to play cm, but it’s still a problem area based on the options England actually have for deeplying midfielders.
