Antony or Anthony?

Simple question; would you rather have our Antony, who we signed for £80m+, or Anthony Elanga, who we let go for £15m?

I have just been having a quick look at Elanga's stats and he has 5 goals and 8 assists in the PL this season. To put that into perspective, Pascal Gross leads the assists table with 10. Bruno has 6 assists for us.

And our highest (joint) scorers in the league are Garnacho and Hojlund on 7.

Elanga has more goal involvements than any of out players in the league and has only played 2,149 minutes (equivalent to 24 games). Did we let him go too soon? And would you swap him right now for Antony?

It’s a good question, but Elanga has shown form that was rarely shown at Utd.

Great signing by Forest though. I feel the same about Awoniyi and Gakpo.

I don't know what it is we do (or don't do) to players, but he just seemed like an honest grafter at United more often than not. At Forest we see electric pace and the confidence to run at defenders, as well as an end product. Maybe it was just pressure, maybe it was playing in a dysfunctional team during a particularly poor season. I don't know.

Also hadn't really played much adult football. He is still only 21 (for a few days at least).

Ultimately, he probably isn't good enough for United - or at least where we want to be. But he has still been a lot better than Antony this season.

I don't think it's that surprising he's impressing thanks to regular football, his profile being a good fit with the style Forest play, and Elanga being a bigger fish in a smaller pond, with the combination of lower expectations and greater respect that delivers. And I don't think there are teams significantly better than Forest that will want to take him on, unless he starts playing at a level higher than what we've seen so far. Going to Forest was a sensible move, and United should be looking to make more sales like that.

No.

Because for no other reason than Elanga was absolute cack, and would never be anything more than cack.

Whereas Antony does have far more to his game than (some of) those around him.

Granted he is a bit of, what used be known as, 'a luxury player'.

But United have had many of those in the past and made it work.

For example, Cantona - so legend has it - was advised by SAF not to bother engaging in tackling - because he just couldn't do it sensibly. And then there was Scholes who lost the ball almost as often as he produced his proverbial "hand grenades".

It's a team game, and the players need to work as a team, if that involves covering others then that's the game ...

Elanga was not good enough for us.

My opinion on him was that he was good enough to have a decent PL career away from OT and that appears to be correct.

Antony has underwhelmed no doubt but I’ve seen claims that Dan James and Elanga are better than him which are utterly ridiculous statements.

Elanga is showing that he’s better when he has more space in front of him when he receives the ball. It’s quite common.

As crap as United are at present, there’s still a far higher proportion of the time where wingers are trying to beat two banks of defence in tight spaces.

It often doesn’t suit players like Elanga.

To be fair, it doesn’t suit Antony either.

A luxury player is an attacking player that produces goals/assists but doesn't help out defensively. Antony is the exact opposite of that. What are you waffling on about?

Interesting that after not being active on the forum for 4 days, IAmMe appears on the thread just minutes after I filtered Culer. A long held suspcioon confirmed right theere.

Dan James is a stretch. But there is an argument for Elanga.

" I’ve seen claims that Dan James and Elanga are better than him which are utterly ridiculous statements."

They really aren't though. Let's not forget that our own scouts valued him at £25m only months before we spent £86m to get him. We sold James for £25m while his stock was probably lower having not done enough at United where as Antony's £25m value will have been off the back of his best period for Ajax.

Regarding managers having a say on transfers and their clubs having a DoF I thought I read that EtH had specifically requested to have influence on transfers when he joined us. I agree that a manager these days shouldn't really be judged on their ability to identify/buy players because it's an areas they shouldn't be involved with but if this is true about EtH then he's done himself no favours and the club are stupid for allowing to have such influence.
