Wolves v Arsenal Match Thread

📆 Saturday 25th January
🕒 3pm
🏟 Molineux Stadium

Wonder what will come of a match between the team with the best set piece record in the league and the one with one of the worst set piece records on record? Apart from a convincing away win of course? Well, you never know, midweek exertions in the Champions League may just allow us the opportunity to strike first and delay the inevitable, home advantage, backs to the wall attitude, please allow me to grab at those straws!

This run of fixtures was always going to be tough, to be unduly critical of the team now amid them could seem churlish, but the sense that the players are coasting through these games is strong and cant be allowed to continue. A turgid, low block & throw your body at everything performance is called for here, I'd rather see us grind out a needs must 0-0 than watch the disorganised ball watching excuse for defending we've seen for most of this season. Its not Vitor's way, but as I said, needs must.

Realistically though its got 0-3 written all over it.

Lemina set to join Saudi club Al Shabab
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I know I previously pointed out that he only ever spends a few seasons at every club he's been at, before moving on due to how volatile his character is; but I'm genuinely disappointed at how this all turned out.

I think the club have been good to him. They even signed his brother when his father died so the family could be close. He had a good season last year and had been a good signing for the club as well as being part of the rescue under Lopetegui.

I think people would have understanded him wanting to leave this window after being stripped of the captaincy. The whole refusing to play and trying to force it is unacceptable though. He could have left as a hero, who people felt gave his all on the pitch, won a player of the season and generally seemed to play with a fiery passion. Instead, he'll probably mainly be remembered for the way he left.

A couple of years ago Wolves and the University of Wolverhampton signed up to the Wolverhampton master plan which included a redevelopment of the Molineux quarter of the city. Today the University has announced its plans to develop its campus in that area. We wait to see whether the football club will reveal a plan to proceed with their part of the development.

Looks like they're going to knock down the old art block, Bute will be devastated.

Nothing on the plans to suggest the club are involved in any way art all.

Art all was a typo but an appropriate one in this case.

The master plan for the Molineux area was built around a 3 way partnership between the council, the university and the football club. With the university now spelling out their plans there must have been conversations with Fosun to get an update on their plans. Maybe that’s why their leader came over last week.

If the club is no longer to participate in the area development then an expansion of Molineux may well not happen for a generation. Pressure will be on Fosun to spell out their plans because the council will need to update its master plan.

Most amazing part of the council/university plans this week is that the art block will be knocked down and replaced and the campus will then stretch across the ring road to join up with the campus on Stafford Road in the town centre. In order to achieve that, the ring road between Molineux and the Stafford Road will become a tunnel.

I do think it’s a sad story with Lemina. Deservedly won player of the season last year. Has been messed about since with GON playing him here there and everywhere but rarely in his best position. But he doesn’t tend to stay at any club long and the way things have blown up now makes you wonder how good a choice he was to be captain. At Southampton he was described as an ego maniac and someone that played a part in a toxic atmosphere in their dressing room.

It was 6 years ago when the plans to redevelop Molinuex were first mentioned. Covid shelved that idea and the money was spent to buy players with the intention of staying in the Premiership. Jeff Shi stated in 2021 that when and if the time was right, the club would take a risk and proceed. However, we were caught up in the FFP rules and it's very unlikely that we'll ever see any redevelopment, especially in the current situation when we could well get relegated.

Only new owners and our ability to avoid the drop this season will this project ever resurface, imo.

Looks likely we will miss out on Danso now with the player now being linked with a move to Juventus. He has been left out of the Lens squad for this weekend suggesting he will go somewhere, but where.

Meanwhile surprise news today that West Ham are considering resigning Craig Dawson

Standard Wolves these days. Feign interest in a player most of the transfer window, but ultimately miss out on the deal as we're not interested in paying the going rate and another club comes in and takes them.

In his press conference today Pereira confirmed that although they hope Larsen’’s injury is not long term, he won’t play tomorrow. He said they won’t change the system they play because of his absence.

Joao is of course suspended tomorrow. Asked who would come in he didn’t confirm that but did outline the possibles. He says he thinks Tommy Doyle is a very good technical player but more a number 8 or 10 rather than ideal for that position. Bellegarde in France had played wide and behind a striker but never in a two man midfield. Boubacar is the closest fit for the position but is just back from a long injury and this week has had flu.

He reiterated that the priority in the transfer market is to bring in a defender and midfielder and they will continue working towards that until the window closes.

A late hitch in agreeing terms means Lemina’s move to Saudi is in doubt. Al Shabab are expected to sign a midfielder from Rennes instead which leaves Mario struggling to find a club before the window closes. Embarrassing all round if he’s forced to stay at Wolves
