Amorim’s record + rest of the season

I saw a pretty crazy stat this morning I didn’t know - Amorim hasn’t won back to back league games since he’s been at the club. This after Wolves who were in a real relegation fight with arguably a worse squad have now won 5 in a row.

Our last 5 games are

Bournemouth away
Brentford away
West Ham home
Chelsea away
Villa home

Of all of those I can genuinely see at best 3 points. We won’t get relegated but 17th place is a real possibility. What does that say about Amorim? Well, if we don’t win the Europa he’s probably made us worse than we were under Ten Hag and maybe Darren was right about him. Could be gone by Christmas if we start badly next season.

To people who say ‘we can’t keep changing managers ..’ - winning back to back league games at a club as big as ours is surely not much of an ask?

You guys have been poor even in the Europa League. Its only due to the new formal where the CL team dont drop into the competition that you guys are still even in it.

The quality in the Europa league is quite frankly shocking.

Your team is performing like ours it seems. Both appear to be in the same boat but while Amorim inherited an underperforming club mid-season without signing players, Ange did all that and made us worse. Amorim would deserve a new season whether he wins the Europa or not. Ange wouldn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The expectation is different for both clubs also.

If Ange won the Europa league, that would certainly buy him another season and seen as a real success. Spurs have always felt like a team on the outside forever trying to get in as a consistent top team, but more as hope rather than expectation.

Utd will always be the club that feels it should be near / around the top no matter what and that's what every manager needs to cope with.

This is not doing Spurs a dis-service or trying to big up Utd, it's just the reality of where the clubs are / perceived
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both clubs have much higher expectations even if United's ceiling of expectation might be higher, being the bigger club.

I still think Amorim would deserve another season as he hasn't properly had the time or players, whereas Ange has for the most part.

United do seem to be posting slightly better form/results also. Ange hasn't gone more than 3 league games unbeaten since February last year. Only other team in the league who hasn't done that is Leicester and don't forget we lost to them at home this season, which was a sackable offence alone.

Until Amorim has some actual senior attacking players of real quality to work with, I see no great value in judging him yet.

Rasmus, Garnacho, Zirkzee... None of them are getting into the starting lineups of many PL teams (at least not at this stage in their development), and for various reasons, neither are/were Mount, Sancho, Antony.

In that forward three, only Amad would walk into a fair chunk of PL starting 11's and he's been injured for a while now. And there's an argument that he's been better for us at RWB with the extra space to hurt opposition.

I genuinely think we need to go and get a LF, CF & RF in the summer + CM & RWB (and GK, but it seems unlikely we can do all of that).

We are so short of real quality atm - we have youngsters with potential, but we really don't know how good they will be over the next few years. If the likes of Yoro, Heaven, Amad, Mainoo etc, if 2 or 3 of them can really be top notch, that obviously helps, and then if we can bring in 2 or 3 established players, then who knows what is possible.

I know the likes of me and Diafol have been saying for a while, we have good squad players, but not top notch ones, so difficult to get near the top with such a squad. But obviously it's not unreasonable to think that they should be capable of mid-table

As a neutral fan Amorim doesn't pass the eye test for me. His man management and media spiel are questionable and tactics look horribly complicated. Arguably took an already lost EtH squad deeper into an exit-less maze I believe he can't dig himself out of.

For reference, in the past 3 decades out of all the teams who were on true relegation form the previous season, only 2 went into title contention (and winning!) the next one: Ranieri's Leicester and Van Gaal's AZ.

Even when they were losing badly, you could already see large patches of play when things were clicking tactics wise. And more importantly, the entire squad players had an absolute belief in the manager, which I haven't seen at Utd since Fergie left. Ole and EtH thought they had one, but there were clearly some unexpected bad apples in the mix and then it fell apart again...

It is hard to disagree with anything you have said.

Standards at this club are an all time low when a manger can’t string back to back results. It is farcical to keep talking about getting his own players. This is a squad that should be top 8 comfortably.

A forward in top form would make a hell of a difference IMO. See Rashford of 2023 and how that helped us look much better. When we beat Barca deservedly did we really think we'd be here right now?

We have three forwards out on loan that cost us around £150m (that includes Rashford who was free!) and if we'd have got those buys right then we'd be looking at it completely differently IMO.

I feel for Hojlund at present though. There's no way he should be the main striker. He should have been the 'project' one you buy for £20m or so that you hope can step up but do so with much less pressure. I'm hoping for his sake, as well as United's, he can have a moment this season like scoring a huge winner that'll elevate him. I don't think he's a bad player but he's one that's devoid of any confidence.

These next few months could be massive for the club.

It’s quite simple: whilst glazers are here zero chance. More likely to get relegated

……..
We actually played well under Amorim, RVN and ETH in this competition. It is like our players see the Europa League as huge motivation. Probably see CL football chance and wages kept high so we turned into world beaters after 2-4 down against Lyon lol.

Man Utd have kept the most possession, have the highest pass accuracy and attempted by far the most shots in the Europa League this season and are tje only unbeaten side.
