Are great managers born, not made?

English misfit Steve mcClaren is to return to management at FC Twente.

This guy learned from Fergie, yet is no better than any other medicore manager in the field. Same with Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane. I appreciate Brian Kidds brilliance in buying relegation at Blackburn, but ultimately he had to go back to being a coach as no other club wanted that as their goal.

If Fergie cannot teach people how to be great managers, does this indicate it is a gift that only a select few are born with? In much the same way only a few people are born great footballers.

Celtic werent that poor, always there or thereabouts in the league. Also they were still performing in Europe and already had Hartson and Larson.

I think he did a good job, but many good managers could have done the same good job.

How about Sven Goran-Erikisson?

he had success at Degefors IF, IFK Goteborg, Benfica and Lazio, plus had some some success with a few Italian sides and did a decent job as England Manager.

Hiddink - Had success at PSV and Chelsea, as as National Manager of South Korea, Russia, Holland and Australia.

Martin O'Neil is someone who has 'got it' (though hes not as good as Fergie or Mourinho.) Comes in at Sunderland and immediately gets the team playing at a higher level than under Bruce. he's done that at all his clubs.

The ability to do that is down to his management qualities of motivation and man-management. His time at Villa perhaps shows he's less talented at a long-term project.

But it still goes to show he was born with something that the likes of Bruce don't have.

I think Steve McClaren is a decent Manager. He had a good record at FC Twente first time round.

His apprentice Jose Mourinho was born 'with it'. That's why he quit playing so he could concentrate on coaching, his real talent.

Granted it helps having a mentor, but you still can't turn a stone into a diamond.
