Off topic!
I've just been made redundant in Barcelona! Totally expected and kind of forced by myself! Since September/October I've literally had nothing to do! (that's why I've been on here so much and learning javascript from youtube).
I get about 2 months of redundancy pay and a few thousand of other extras. I've worked here for just over a year, so in addition to that I will only be getting 4 months of unemployment benefit, which I heard is a max of €1000 a month.
I've never been unemployed in the UK but it seems you can practically claim indefinitely for unemployment benefit. Is this true? Why in the UK can't we have system where you can claim for benefits depending on your how long you worked?

@Valencia - I heard I don't have to go in?
So I shouldn't come to Valencia then?

I've got lots of family in Extremadura. Its bad there as well. I think Spain is going to have lots of problems for the next 4/5 years.

well firstly Barca es muy caro, no?...i dont know your living arrangements, if you rent an apartment on your own etc...but valencia is probably 50% - 66% of the cost of renting in Barca...thats my opinion, i only know valencia costs...and i dont what you worked at mate....

Valencia - Barca is totally overpriced and overrated to live!
I've got a place until the end of march, I'm only paying 600 euros all inclusive as I'm sort of house sitting! But I think the guy pays about 800 euros, but I'm not sure if it includes bills or not. In any case good quality places are around 800 euros plus bills, but accommodation here is overpriced and poor quality.
I actually find London cheaper than Barca sometimes! well barring transport!

yeh that doesnt surprise me....you can get a very decent 1/2 bed apartment in a very decent part of valencia city for 450 - 500 a month....i live elsewhere at the moment but intend to rent an attico in the heart of valencia within the next 6 weeks....and yeh i also heard that barca whilst great is full of old people who dont like too much fiesta!!!...was in madrid last year with Spurs, wow great city but also very expensive, like london/paris....

That is super cheap!!!!
nah, people party in Barca but not like Madrid, things end a bit early here!
Thing about Barca is the Catalans don't want to mix with the locals, so foreigners hang out more but as everyone speaks English, you can't learn Spanish!
So would you recommend I try Valencia then?

well, why not....go there for a weekend, check out the city, you have some cool districts, like el carmen, rustafa and botanico for areas to live and then you have also el plaza de la reina, which is like the centre...but definitely, you could stay at Silken Puerta which is a very cool hotel from about 50 a night!! check out booking.com i am probably gonna be up there the weekend of the 3rd, checking out some cool atticos...

Ok, thanks. I've been to Valencia before, nice but really small!
I went on idealista.com and fotocasa.es stuff is cheaper and better quality than Barca but not as cheap as you were saying, I think more 600. Are there any other places to find property?
Also, is the minimum term rental period the same as here, 1 year?

I think in the UK, if you are made redundant if you have more than £10K in the bank they won't let you sign on, after all that tax you put in the economy and you can't even benefit from it!
