I agree, Mikel would be a good squad player and a good option when we want to be more sureheld, although hopefully the need for that will be lessened with a new deep playmaker. Lampard still hasn't impressed me with regards to dscipline in a 4-2-3-1 - sometimes he's basically next to Mata and leaves Mikel horribly exposed. But then his experience could be very useful next season, esipecally as we approach the buisness end. Just as that option.
Also I think we only need 5 midfielders max for a 4231, unless Ramires switches between the wing and midfield which I could see
Superb
If we switch to 4231, for that double pivot i think we need 6 midfielders max. I would have:
Romeu, Mikel, Ramires, Mceachran, Meireles and a new midfielder. Unfortunately meaning Lamps has to go
------------------------------------------------------------------
As I said above the club won´t sell Frank this summer.
Take into account that Lampard is our top scorer again this season and that´s without even playing for much of the time under AVB.
In a 4231 one of the double pivot can also provide cover to the full back though if he attacks while not leaving the the centre exposed. Another problem with 433 is that it would require for us to buy another mobile DM because Mikel is just too slow and ponderous as a lone holding midfielder. However, as Mikel has shown recently in a 4231 he can still play a key role for us
Hmm without Champions League footy i definitely think RA would be tempted too. If he really was a key figure in the sacking of Avb who was Roman's man etc as well as reducing the wage bill. The only one out of the old guard i think is really safe is Terry
I'd like Muniain and Khedira. That'd do me.
The problem Chelsea have is that since Mourinho, you have bougght 'powerful' players which is all well and good when they are playing well and you steamroller teams as under Mourinho or Ancellotti in his first year. This works when you have Essien and Ballack doing the dirty work. Once Essien got injured, Ballack left, Lampard is a really good box to box player but not a powerhouse, Mikel and Miereless are average, Malouda is awful - all you really have in midfield is Ramires. Add to that that Drogba is not pulling his weight. Is it any real surprise that Chelsea are suffering? It's like driving a heavy 40 year old Rolls Royce with a Fiat 500 engine, slow, cumbersome and with no punch (insert Ivanovich joke here)
To go forward, you need to build a new team around the likes of Ivanovic, Ramires and Mata, as at preswent you have no power and you have little creativity too.

I love your posts. Always on the money. Agree with you about building a team around them 3. Maybe not so much Ramires though
Without Mata then it's best as 4-3-3 I'd say

Agreed, we have absolutely no reason to play 4-2-3-1 when Mata's rested, like on Monday.

Therein lies the problem. Would love the new spine to be ivanovic, Luiz, Mata. Not sure Ramires will be as key a figure in future

Totally agree, Don Mata. Those 3 players are good enough for Chelsea (if Ivanovic is played at right back - not centre back, and assuming he can keep his temper in check). But not sure anyone else in the squad is. Cech probably. Terry is still great, but only for another year or so. I still think Torres is great, although I may be in the minority. But that's it! We need a whole new midfield, as none of them are good enough. Ramires is a fan favourite because he works so hard and has lung-busting running abilities - but he's not really good enough to start. And he's our best midfield player! Mikel is strong, and I am a fan of his, but he moves the ball so slowly it stops us from being a counter-attacking side. Meireles is a copy of every average midfield player in the league, but with worse hair. Lampard is a good player, but slower than he used to be (and he was never fast). Kalou, Malouda, Sturridge are all uninspiring. Kalou tries hard but is pretty useless. Sturridge has speed but is generally a headless chicken. Malouda - well, the less said about Malouda the better.
We need 3 new midfield players, 2 wide players and a striker. And that's assuming our defense can hold on for another year. There is a lot of rebuilding to do - and it needs to be done quickly if we are to start competing for the premiership again.
