Looking at Mertens's goal record it's a bit hit and miss. Some seasons he's scored a lot, others not so much. I know he's been moved around a lot though positionally, which is a testament to his versatility I suppose.
Having said that Mertens is Napoli's second highest goal scorer ever, ahead of Maradona which is no mean feat.
Would be happy with Cavani on a 6 month loan, but nothing longer because of his exorbitant wage demands.
Mertens I think would be reasonable on an 18 month deal, as long as if we're only paying Napoli a small fee to get him in Jan.

I prefer Mertens to Cavani - and if we aren't sure about Piatek and Dembele then neither is worth the significant outlay.
If Mertens was 28 and coming to the end of his contract, there would be 15-20 clubs competing for his signature due to his quality and goal record. So, I am perfectly happy for him to come here for 2-2.5 years.

Considering his age, I'm sure we'd only be signing him for 18month contract at most. Very low risk imo. If he works out, we can renew for a year and if not we can just cut our (minimal) losses. I think the biggest thing right now is that we get some competition in our attacking positions without compromising our long term squad vision (and the funding necessary to carry out those plans). Mertens is perfect in that regard - but as you said, Piatek, Cavani and Dembele would all require a significant outlay.
Though unfortunately Mertens doesn't really solve our striker problem - unless Lampard is willing to completely switch up the way we play.

True although I'd rather have him in the squad than go until the end of the season with just Tammy. Bats barely counts as Lamps obviously doesn't trust him to start a PL game.
As others here have said Mertens could play alongside Tammy, possibly behind him as a 10, or if needed instead of him. So he gives some much needed options in a squad where Loftus-Cheek is forever injured and Bats barely counts as an option.
