I am permanently fascinated by how basically all other forms of cheating except diving are "clever play" to most pundits.

Time wasting, professional fouling, manufacturing contact/fouls are all just what smart players/teams do. Diving is what dirty cheats.

Really odd to me.

Only if it’s diving inside the box as it could directly lead to penalties / goals.

Other forms of cheating are generally not as impactful in isolation.

I’d agree dives are funny when they don’t affect a game

And also the effect they have on the outcome of a match is more hypothetical in nature (e.g. if those 30 secs were not wasted would the other have actually gone on to score).

This is the difference. United kill the games and can rest their top players.

I think that diving is a part of the game that most often leads to direct scoring opportunities. That in itself is reason enough to condemn it more harshly than other forms.

It also leads to yellows and reds. I get you dont like the other forms of cheating but this one changes outcomes too directly.

Professional fouls deny goalscoring opportunities. Hacking someone down to prevent a 4 on 3 counter almost certainly denies a goalscoring opportunity.

Time wasting (especially when coordinated) can dramatically reduce the length of the match and so alter results.

There's a lot more that has to go right before it leads to direct scoring opportunities. Its not as if all counters produce goals just because of an advantage in numbers.

Professional fouls lead to cards for the cheater. Theyre not trying to fool the ref. They know they will receive punishment for their actions.

Time wasting is annoying and refs are.too lenient with it but it cannot be controlled. You cannot rush a team just because the other team want to have more chances. Controlling possession can be seen as time wasting but thats not exactly cheating is it? Passing it around forever and keeping it away from your opponents. I do wish the ref would card quicker when its abundantly clear that its taking place though. Throw-ins, keepers delaying kicks, opponents kicking the ball during free kicks etc..

Diving is the worst though for reasons I stated before.

You can control all forms of cheating through effective punishment and enforcement. If you issued straight red cards for time wasting, the incentives for time wasting would change. Currently there is no disincentive not to time waste if you stand to gain from wasting time.

I'd be interested to know what impact diving has on results relative to other forms of cheating. But I'm not convinced it is uniquely bad.

We got some good fortune vs Palace with the Cahill injury. Should have really made it 3-0, can think of the Zouma free header and the Willian chance.

Instead it became much hard work

This guy is just on a different level man it’s like prime Fabregas

Cahill injury is uncontrollable, officiating isn’t

Yeah Southampton will give them a decent game but don't see them dropping points to anyone.

They get a free penalty every game too
