Therefore they are your responsibility, maybe the IFA should do more to accomodate them and make them feel welcome at NI matches, as they are supposed to be NI citizens right?

____________

Sigh.

Is it even worth asking? Ill give it a go. What would make them more welcome?

..........................................................

Funny you should ask, Reiver actually posted an article on this very topic a few weeks back, gave some very sensible and balanced suggestions there, have a read if you can.

Is the jist - whats NOT welcoming - or what WOULD be welcoming? I'm only interested in being educated about the latter.

posted on 16/6/12

Yes the article talks about what WOULD be welcoming and I agree with most of the suggestions....

basically just de-politicise the flag and the anthem ever so slightly... and you're there! It's not hard.

Gawa, Its clearly not a minority who shout no surrender. I was watching the 5 nil hammering on TV, and even though you only had about 30 fans down in the capital, I could hear it clearly. And its much worse at Windsor park.

-----------------------------------------------------------

what nonsense - i take it this what your refer to?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJOQUbJoeVs

i dont hear any 'no surrender' - more boos of the national anthem by the republic supporters if anything.

yet another case of you making assumptions, and you know what they say about assumptions......

I understand your argument, but the pro RA chants on the youtube video that the Unionist mp was whining about last week, were from a bunch of northerners originating from Northern Ireland... not south of the border... Therefore they are your responsibility, maybe the IFA should do more to accomodate them and make them feel welcome at NI matches, as they are supposed to be NI citizens right??

---------------------------------------------------------

classic! so people that travel to poland, wear Republic shirts, go to the ROi mathes and sign songs supporting the RA is the IFA;s fault? Yet more proof that ROI supporters dont want the UK based ROI supporters.

GAWA I recall you having a few pops at me regarding political threads/posts..............................

Colin, about the anthem, maybe the shoe should be put on the other foot? We know that catholics/nationalists don't much like GSTQ. But we never hear what they would like to hear instead. Couldn't the catholic/nationalist community meet the IFA half-way and form some kind of committee on what they would like instead, having carried out some kind of poll? Or would the poll be largely ignored at best, treated with contempt at worst.

In any case it would demonstrate to the IFA and Northern Ireland fans that ( in nationalist areas or similar ) there is a serious and genuine desire to support NI but for some stumbling blocks.

Ps, what's the issue with the flag?

in all seriousness - i myself have never shouted No surrender and walked out mid way through the 2nd half of this match in disgust.

This is no different to the idiots which where signing about RA, anti queen and billy wright songs in poland. The minority make a bad name for both sides over these issues. Something which both communities would want rid of

Sorry guys but only back online now. First of all, I would like to apologise for mentioning religion earlier. I don't really care about religion at all. It was more trying to understand the logic of godfather.

Colin, i am aware that your fans don't ring offensive songs at matches, but again, i was trying to understand how he could label our fans with these things, whilst ignoring their own.

Really, I am not offended by the Republic or the atmosphere at their matches. I just think that we will all identify with our own culture and will be drawn to that. I just get annoyed by godfather labelling Northern Ireland this and that. Whilst ignoring the fact that every "fault" is mirrored with the Republic. It's blatant hypocrisy.

I believe it was a chant used by the Apprentice Boys of Derry about 300 years ago!
