Lescott is good at left backn played there a lot back in his Wolves days, hasn't Jagielka done a job there in the past too?

Bridge (where is he being loaned this year?)and Warnock are woeful though, I wouldn't say Fryers has proved himself to be a better player yet either.

He only cost £3.9Million so its not much of risk as Evra will be first choice anyway, best case scenario he turns out to be a bargain and replaces Evra but even if he flops its not too damaging unless Evra gets injured.

Its good to have an extra body at LB if nothing else.

On the face of it, it does seem a strange one though. He didnt make Holland's final Euro squad, and IMO left-back was a very weak position for Holland. I remember their first choice left-back getting torn apart.

Never seen him play though, so i'll reserve judgement.

When did £4m no longer qualify as a significant amount of money

Who had heard of Heinze when he signed from PSG at 25/26 years old?

Carrick didn't make the England squad for the euros but is still arguably Englands best midfielder, also the times he does make the squad hes on the bench for players like Lampard/Gerrard etc. I wouldn't read too much into international selections.

Even if he is dreadful we could still probably sell him for atleast £2million back to a club in holland.

I know, fair point. But I have nothing else to base him on really.

Kagawa - I just meant in general, speak speak about millions of pounds as though its loose change.

As for the international comparison, Holland played a 17 year old at full back, you'd think somebody who has been pllaying in his home country for 5 years would have made some sort of name for himself. We will see.

While it may be a little worrying that he hasnt even had 1 international cap and a 17 year old is higher in the pecking order, Cleverley is the same age and only made his England debut last week. He may not be the finished article yet but Ferguson and the scouting team must see something in him.

Yeah true, I think we should leave it until he actually plays a game....I'd expect in the CC.

What I would like to know is, who was this mysterious 'third party' that Buttner told his club wanted a fee in order for the deal with Southampton to go through? All sounds very very dodgy.

posted on 20/8/12

Probably just his agent or previous club who had a clause when selling him.

If it was his old club, then Vitesse would surely have known about it before they started negotiating with Southampton? But they didn't. Have a read of this article, it is a bit odd.

Ah yes, you'd certainly assume so, probably an agent like the Lucas sinario.

Yeh probs just the agent. The way it is worded though makes it sound weird. Maybe it is just lost in translation? If it was the agent that was due the money, then why not just say that?

Speaking in Holland earlier this summer, Buttner, described as a tenacious defender, claimed that his suburban upbringing has moulded his character.

My biggest strength? I never give up.” Buttner said. “I was born in a suburb in Doetinchem, called the Camp.

“My grandparents lived in a camp, like a trailer camp, and I was a real street urchin. A little rat.

“I was always playing football on the streets and it was a tough education, I can tell you." from the telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/9488270/Manchester-United-set-to-complete-3.9m-signing-of-Vitesse-Arnhems-Alexander-Buttner.html

Another bonkers LB like Evra sounds encouraging!

The left-back was Vitesse's joint second highest goalscorer in the Eredivisie last season with five.
