Because an elbow to the face is usually a yellow/red so it's not common to find yourself at the receiving end of one.

Because footballers are girly enough.

could be a kick in the teeth (diaby on terry) or a clash of heads

Hmm. Communication is a key part of playing as a team. How well can you communicate verbally with a gumshield in?

When was the last time you heard of a footballer losing a tooth, or biting their tongues off/badly?

Can't remember who it was but I remember seeing a player get booted in his face and losing 5 or 6 teeth last season. Happens more than you would think, clash of heads (a bit like Koscielny got from Giroud.) flying elbow, boot in the jaw, etc. Many ways a player risks losing a tooth or 2.

It happens, but not enough that players would want to do it.

Remember, these guys gel their hair before they go on the pitch. They can't have some ugly mouth guard ruining their look!

shouldn't it be part of their regulation kit, like shinpads?

Have you ever worn a gum-shield? Its friggin annoying. I like to feel as comfortable as possible when playing football. Plus its not as if there is a desperate need for one.

played rugby so yes i have.

basketball players wear them just a thought why footballers don't

It's not a pressing matter, so it won't be changed.

Goal line ruddy technology isn't even here yet. And the only thing I've seen that bloke standing by the goal line do was in the match us v Montpieller where he gave the penalty (not complaining, it was the correct call).

Football does not have significant contact to the head so its not needed. I did see someone wearing one once in pub league game as he thought it made him look hard and intimidating. It had the opposite effect and he got targeted for quite a few fouls.

As you dont expect a blow to the mouth like boxing or even rugby I take the view only a wimp who cant take it would wear one. I've had teeth a little loose and wobbly after getting hit in football but still wouldnt wear one.
