They could make the Europa league more interesting by giving the semi-finalists entry into the final qualifying round of the champions league the following season.Losing finalist 4th seeding in the champions league proper and the winners given second seeding in the champions league pot.It will make teams take the Europa league seriously and award them financially too
The European Cup isn't as good now because seeding means that any half decent team should be realistically getting to quarters every season
There's plenty UEFA can do to spice up the Europa cup, but i agree with Lex. This is an indication that they've given up on the Europa Cup.
The Europa league is a shocking tournament, especially in the dire group stages.

a decent idea.
although i like the CL as it is.. i think i would be interesting to see how teams like us (spurs) and everton etc would get on v some of the best sides on a regular basis.
that is just curiosity though. i dont like the idea of a watered down situation.
although as far as the prem is concerned, it would make the "mid table" battle much more interesting, and keep the season alive longer for more teams..
This will essentially be the death of the PL and any other top division if it goes ahead, it is the beginning of creating a Europe wide top league. Personally, I don't agree with any part of it whatsoever.

agreed.
the thought of a superpower euro league doesnt please me.
not just because spurs may miss out, but purely because i like the prem as it is.
Wouldnt wonder if that is true. Money talks.

Exactly, and what's stopping the number of teams qualifying going to 8 or 10, or indeed to a stage when the "elite" clubs pull out altogether to form a superleague?
Excellent news for Stan and Ivan, we can sell more of our best players and then celebrate scraping the 7th place trophy come the end of the season.
Initially it may sound ridiculous but when one ponders the effect it may have then perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. First of all you have to rid yourself of the nostalgia associated with the European Cup, that was way in the past and was not a perfect competition in itself as there were better teams playing in the UEFA Cup than some of those that made semis and finals of the European Cup!
Having 7 places up for grabs could be good for the Prem, not perhaps for the likes of Arsenal who will view finishing 7th as a job well done, but perhaps for the likes of Spurs, Everton, Newcastle and what about West Brom, who could see new possibilities opening up to them.
In my opinion the Europa League has little value, in terms of prestige in winning it or monetarily, it's a bit of a flop really so perhaps an enlarged Champions League could be a better alternative.
Finally we'll get to see even more juicy cup ties, I know there will be some dilution with a few poorer teams but it could also be good with more of the top English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and German teams involved.
Don't agree with this idea.
It could improve the quality of the leagues though if you look at it from a financial point of view.
Imagine the benefits to say someone like Everton if they could get CL without being top 4. They could actually keep their top players and invest in better ones.
Our Board will be happiest people as they can live with it now without spending too much of £$£$. The reason, AW and board will say, it's ok if we finish in Top-7. I can see AW and our club welcoming this idea .
I agree with the poster who said this is just a backdoor to a European League. This will bring more sponsorship opportunities for the big clubs and the others will be left to compete for domestic titles.

And the also-rans rarely win the Champions League the best team taking the prize in the end on most occasions so no big deal there.

I agree with you Lambsy. For Arsenal we're stuck in a rut whereby the club is very happy to finish in the top 4 and view it as a job done. Further expanding the league would just mean the benchmark for qualification is lower and therefore even less investment for improvement.
For the other clubs its probably a life saver. Qualify 7th and you get to visit the Bernbeau, San Siro and Allianz.

Yeah but would the reward of being in the CL be the same?
I mean people are already struggling to go to game. How many empty stadium have we seen lately?
Also when it comes to TV right, does not neccessary means more money! At the moment the like ESPN and Skysport are paying a fortune for what it is an exclusive competition. Double the number of team, it will not be that exclusive anymore!
Why not expand it?
Spread the cash more evenly between league clubs....
Newcastle, Spurs, Everton, Villa and such would have seen the benifit
Ditto Chronic,
Regarding the Europa, that is viewed differently on the continent than it is here, it has a lot more importance there. For me, the discrepency in prize money between the two is the main problem why English clubs don't take it too seriously, there just isn't enough money in it to make it worthwhile unless you win the thing.
The problem is with what people actually want to create. Due to the difference in prize money, it is very difficult for clubs to get in to the CL if they are not already as the gap just grows and grows (unless, of course, you get significant investment).
Personally, I would prefer them to be talking about how to make football more competitive without the need for clubs to seek that investment from elsewhere, however they seem to be more fixated on ideas that will actually do the opposite.
Perhaps UEFA have done the math and realised that the introduction of the FFP may actually mean some would struggle to qualify for the Champions League,so doubling the amount of qualifiers would soften the blow
So maybe if its top 3 automatic. 4th/5th via play off along with FA cup winner and League cup winners.
