Up to 335,000 hedgehogs are dying each year on UK roads, a study suggests.

The figure represents a three-fold mortality rate on 2016 data, described as "alarming" by a team at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) researchers.

A study in 2016 put the UK road death figure at 100,000 but experts suggested that was a "mid-line estimate".

Researchers said measures such as tunnels and speed bumps "could" protect the animals but ultimately relied on drivers' behaviour to change.

PhD student Lauren Moore led the review, which has been jointly funded by wildlife charity People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and NTU.

Christmas is unlikely to be the "usual celebration" of "families coming together", a leading scientist has said.

Jeremy Farrar, who sits on the Sage committee that advises the government, warned it would be a "tough" Christmas.

The Wellcome Trust director also told Sky News there was "light at the end of the tunnel" as he believed a vaccine would be ready early in 2021.

PM Boris Johnson has warned things will be "bumpy to Christmas and beyond".

Earlier this week, Prof Farrar told BBC Newscast arguments between Westminster and local leaders were "very dangerous" and also that a circuit-breaker, or a short, limited lockdown, was needed now.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk needs surgery on a knee ligament injury sustained in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Netherlands defender was unable to continue following a rash challenge by Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford in the first half.

It is unclear how long he will be out for with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

He went for a scan before a specialist confirmed the extent of the injury.

Returning to action after ACL surgery can take many months.

Van Dijk has been a key figure for Liverpool since signing for them in January 2018 for £75m.

Fallon Sherrock, who made history by beating two men at the PDC World Darts Championship, has narrowly failed to qualify for the 2021 tournament.

She lost out despite winning the last of four women's events which offered two spots for the championship, which starts at Alexandra Palace in December.

Deta Hedman edged through on a total of 85 legs to 83 for the second place, after Lisa Ashton had sealed her spot.

Four-time BDO women's champion Ashton won a PDC Tour card earlier this year.

She played in the 2019 World Championship while Hedman will make her debut.

West Brom and Burnley played out the first goalless draw in the Premier League this season, with both teams still searching for a first win.

Filip Krovinovic almost gave hosts West Brom the lead inside three minutes but he dragged a shot wide of the right post, before debutant Karlan Grant had a goal disallowed for offside.

But Burnley had the better chances at The Hawthorns on Monday - Chris Wood crashing a header against the crossbar and Ashley Barnes forcing keeper Sam Johnstone into a good save in the second half.

Matheus Pereira's volley was kept out at the near post by Clarets' keeper Nick Pope and West Brom defender Branislav Ivanovic also came close as both teams pushed for a winner.

The result means Burnley have their first point but they remain in the bottom three after four games, with promoted West Brom ahead by one point.

Chelsea's defensive issues are so bad that they need to score several goals each game to stand a chance of winning, says captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

They have conceded nine times in five Premier League games this season and were 2-0 and 3-2 up against Southampton on Saturday before drawing 3-3.

Last month Chelsea came from 3-0 down to draw against West Brom.

"When you're weak defensively sometimes we feel like we have to score three or four each game," Azpilicueta said.

"I see football as a collective. When we don't score, as a defender I think how can we put our attacking players in better situations.

"Through a season you are not going to be winning 3-0 or 4-0 every week. You have to work to get results and at the moment we have to improve that."

Elsewhere, midfielder Mesut Ozil has been left out of Arsenal's 25-man post-transfer window squad.

He has not fought since a defeat by Jared Cannonier in May last year.

You won't be picking up any Scouse, that's for sure. You may well, though, be picking up some north Walian intonations, which can, to the untrained ear, be reminiscent of Scouse. Gareth Piece is north Walian. He was born in Pwllheli and is a Welsh speaker.
