Convenience store chain McColl's is on the brink of collapse, potentially placing thousands of jobs at risk.

The retailer said it was "increasingly likely" it would fall into administration unless talks around a rescue deal were successful.

The statement on Thursday came after Sky News reported the company could call administrators in on Friday.

More than 16,000 people are employed by McColl's, which also has a partnership with supermarket Morrisons.

The company wrote that without any fresh funding in the short-term, the group would likely "be placed into administration with the objective of achieving a sale of the group to a third-party purchaser and securing the interests of creditors and employees".

But the chain also stressed on Thursday that discussions are still ongoing.

Leicester City missed out on a place in the Europa Conference League final after losing 1-0 at Roma.

Tammy Abraham's powerful header for the home side was the difference as Leicester struggled to make an impact at the Stadio Olimpico.

The England striker's goal was enough to prevent the Foxes reaching a first European final after the first leg finished 1-1 at the King Power Stadium.

It will be the Italian side's first European final since 1991, where they will face Feyenoord.

Consumer prices in Turkey soared nearly 70% in April from a year ago, hitting a two-decade high, official figures show.

Transport, food prices and household furnishings recorded the sharpest rise in annual inflation, with transport costs more than doubling over the year.

Countries around the world are dealing with a growing cost of living crisis.

But Turkey's problems have been made worse by its president's reluctance to raise interest rates - a commonly used tool to help cool inflation.

The cost of food and non-alcoholic drinks saw an annual increase of 89.1%, while furnishings and household equipment were up 77.64%.

On a monthly basis, prices jumped 7.25% in April, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Less than a third of Scots back Nicola Sturgeon's push for a fresh independence referendum by the end of next year despite her local elections dominance.

Two polls indicated widespread opposition to the SNP's timetable, even though the party ruled the roost again in council contests last week.

There also appears to be a continuing majority against leaving the UK, after public feeling reverted from a shift during the pandemic.

Survation research for the Scotland In Union campaign group found 29 per cent favoured another national vote on splitting the UK before the end of 2023.

In contrast, 60 per cent said they were opposed and 11 per cent were undecided.

A separate Panelbase poll for the Sunday Times put support for another independence referendum within 12 months at just 24 per cent - although that figure has risen five points since November.
