Thousands of jobs at risk as British Steel threatens closure
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjryeqrnldvo
Former Lancashire and England fast bowler Peter Lever has died at the age of 84 following a short illness.
Lever was part of the England team that won the Ashes in Australia in 1970-71 under captain Raymond Illingworth, the tour in which he made his Test debut.
On the same trip, Lever also played in the very first one-day international, a hastily arranged 40-over match between England and Australia when the third Test in Melbourne was washed out.
He actually first played for England earlier in 1970, against a Rest of World XI, matches that were eventually stripped of Test status.
Overall, Lever took 41 wickets in 17 Tests and 11 more in 10 one-day internationals.
He played for Lancashire between 1960 and 1976, claiming almost 800 wickets in 301 first-class matches.
His wife Ros said: "It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that Peter Lever has passed away peacefully today. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
"An enormous thank you to everyone that has been caring and considerate in supporting Peter through these difficult recent times."

In a famous game between Derbyshire and Lancashire at Buxton, it snowed and left the pitch as something of a lottery. Peter refused to bowl because he thought it was too dangerous.
The bond forged between his former England captain Raymond Illingworth and Peter continued after their playing days. When Raymond was in charge of the England team as the supremo head coach and selector, he made Peter the bowling coach.
Peter moved with his wife Ros to Devon, immersing himself in the local community. He coached at Lewdown Cricket Club and planted wild flowers around the village.
In 2017, Andrew Strauss arranged a 'Club England' dinner at Lord's for everyone, men and women, who had ever played for England. I was asked to host the evening and accepted only on the condition I could sit next to Peter. We were all given special caps to recognise our time playing for England. I presented Peter's to him and he presented mine to me. It was a lovely moment.
He had a massive influence on my cricketing life. They say you should never meet your heroes. I'm so lucky that I got to know mine.
Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves has had a rape conviction overturned on appeal by a Spanish court.
The appeals division of Catalonia's High Court of Justice unanimously upheld the appeal by the 41-year-old and acquitted him, saying the case against him had "inconsistencies and contradictions".
Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February 2024 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.
The former full-back, who earned 126 international caps, was released on bail in March 2024 while his appeal was heard by a higher court.
The appeal court said that the ruling in the original court case "contains, throughout the reasoning, a series of gaps, inaccuracies, inconsistencies and contradictions regarding the facts, the legal assessment and their consequences.
"The complainant's account, which should have been subjected to greater scrutiny, has not been compared with the fingerprint and biological evidence, which support the defence's argument."
Further, the court ruled that the complainant's argument that she went with Alves into the bathroom for fear that his friends might follow them did not appear reasonable.
It concluded that the alleged victim instead "voluntarily went to the bathroom area for the purpose of being with the defendant in a more intimate space".
The Catalan court also lifted all restrictions on Alves, including a travel ban and restraining order. However, the decision can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.
"Alves is very happy. He is innocent, that is demonstrated. Justice has spoken," his lawyer Ines Guardiola told RAC1 radio.
Alves had trophy-laden spells with Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris St-Germain and also helped Brazil win two Copa Americas and an Olympic gold medal at the age of 38.
He was playing for Pumas UNAM when he was arrested, which led to the Mexican club terminating his contract immediately.

More than half of job centres are reducing support for people claiming Universal Credit due to a shortage of work coaches, according to a report from the public spending watchdog.
The National Audit Office said reasons for cutbacks included a lack of funding and challenges in recruiting and retaining staff.
It comes as the number of claimants being categorised as requiring support has risen from 2.6 million to 3 million in the space of a year.
The government said it was redeploying 1,000 work coaches to help, but a charity campaigning to end poverty said the shortage undermined plans announced in the chancellor's Spring Statement to get more disabled people into work.
Iain Porter, senior policy adviser at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, said the government's promise to boost employment had been used to "justify the biggest cuts to disability benefits in recent memory".
"The government must urgently explain how it plans to support disabled people into work while these work coach shortages remain," he said.
Published on Monday, the report said there were 2,100 fewer work coaches - who can offer advice and refer claimants for jobs - employed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in England, Wales and Scotland than it estimated were needed.
It said that some 57% of job centres had used flexibilities allowed by the DWP to reduce support for claimants when caseloads are too high between September 2023 and November 2024.
Changes to income rules meant an extra 400,000 people qualified for such support in the year to October.
The number of claimants moving into work each month has also fallen over the past two years.
1995 – Selena is murdered by her fan club president Yolanda Saldívar at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (née Quintanilla; April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter. Known as the "Queen of Tejano Music", her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin songs chart. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.
The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted in the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was often criticized and was refused bookings at venues across Texas for performing Tejano music—a male-dominated music genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album the same year, while her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.
Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's commercial success led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. One of its singles, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular signature songs. Live! (1993) won Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to do so. In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being responsible for Tejano music's first marketable era as it became one of the most popular Latin music subgenres at the time.
Selena was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Saldívar, her friend and the former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques. Saldívar was cornered by police when she attempted to flee and threatened to kill herself but was convinced to give herself up. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with possible parole after 30 years. Two weeks after Selena's death, George W. Bush, then-governor of Texas, declared April 16 as Selena Day in Texas. Her posthumous crossover album, Dreaming of You (1995), debuted atop the Billboard 200, making Selena the first Latin artist to accomplish this feat. In 1997, Warner Bros. released Selena, a film about her life and career, which starred a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez as Selena, catapulting Lopez into fame. In 2020, Netflix released Selena: The Series starring Christian Serratos. Selena has sold around 18 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists in Latin music.

What a talented and beautiful woman she was.
Rotherham started life after Steve Evans with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Northampton.
Matt Hamshaw took charge of his first game as interim boss and saw Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu give the Millers a first-half lead before Sam Nombe snuffed out any hope of a Northampton comeback.
Rotherham should have taken an early lead at Sixfields but Hakeem Odoffin's shot lacked conviction when the goal was at his mercy before the same player headed straight at goalkeeper Lee Burge.
Burge was a busy man in the early stages, also reacting smartly to deny Nombe, but he could do nothing about Rotherham's 22nd-minute opener when Louie Sibley's shot was deflected into the net by Mpanzu.
Northampton offered zero threat in an error-strewn first half but they improved after the break and Cameron Dawson needed to be at his best to brilliantly keep out Sam Hoskins.
However, Rotherham hit their hosts with a sucker-punch in the 65th minute when a corner caused chaos in the box and Nombe stabbed in from two yards out, and from there the result was never in doubt.
Jorgen Strand Larsen made it three goals in two games as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat West Ham United to move further away from the relegation zone.
The Norway striker sat out the international break with a fractured hand, but returned to record a 10th Premier League strike this season.
With Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha still suspended, the 25-year-old Strand Larsen converted just inside the penalty area in the 21st minute following a mazy run from Joao Gomes, albeit with the help of a slight deflection off West Ham's former Wolves defender Max Kilman.
The hosts came close to doubling their lead five minutes later following another Gomes surge and run from Strand Larsen, but Marshall Munetsi's snatched effort crashed off the crossbar.
West Ham never really got going in the first half, although Evan Ferguson - making his first start for the club since his January loan move from Brighton - should have converted Jarrod Bowen's cut-back at the far post 13 minutes in.
Boss Graham Potter made three changes at half-time with Carlos Soler, Niclas Fullkrug and Edson Alvarez all introduced, and the visitors immediately offered more of an attacking threat.
German forward Fullkrug - returning from a hamstring injury that had kept him out since early January - almost made an instant impact, but sliced his finish horribly off target after finding himself behind the Wolves backline.
The Hammers continued to probe and dominate possession, forcing the home side to play on the break, and Strand Larsen fired narrowly wide from a Matt Doherty pull-back after a fast counter-attack.
West Ham thought they deserved a penalty when Doherty appeared to catch Fullkrug in the face with a high boot, but a video assistant referee (VAR) check upheld referee Tony Harrington's on-field decision.
They went agonisingly close again when Fullkrug hit the bar with a towering header, although the offside flag would have ruled it out.
Midfielder Tomas Soucek should have levelled when played through on goal in the 90th minute, but he dragged his effort wide with only keeper Jose Sa to beat.
Wolves had a chance to wrap up the success on the break, but Munetsi prodded wide after Strand Larsen played him in.
