Our transfer policy under Souness in the early 90s was about as bad as it gets. We went from being probably the best team in the market for a good two decades to pretty hopeless in about 18 months.
Criminally selling the genius that was Peter Beardsley about two years too early then buying Dean Saunders. Then needlessly selling him to Villa not much later (where he helped them to 2nd) and bizarrely signing the average Nigel Clough, fluffing about 5 million on Stewart and the hideous Julian D icks whilst letting go David Burrows and Mike Marsh.
Selling the likes of McMahon and Houghton and buying Michael Thomas who apart from his FA Cup goal never done much.
If that was bad his foreign signings were the stuff of legend. Istvan Kozma who was sunday league standard and then Torben Piechnik. who played like he was having a picnic. Neither were exactly cheap neither.
Torben gave us a few laughs on the Kop to be fair but that summed the Souness reign up. Considering he was brought in to replace the clubs greatest ever centre back in Alan Hansen it has to be a contender, he was clueless.
Some good ones in there gents. A title winning side ripped up and replaced with junk.
The general pattern is if you spend big you invariably lose big, not too many exceptions.
Obviously there are factors to include such as age, contract and time actually spent at the club.
Torben Piechnik. who played like he was having a picnic

You have to be able to laugh, eh?
Your post did make me chuckle, I must say. Old Torben Picnic was a classic!
i disagree with robinho being on here, he was the 4th highest prem scorer in his first season and set a real benchmark by proving that city were going to become a big club, then he got injured second season so hardly played, we then sold him for £18m to Milan.
Aquillani was terrible business. He was brought in to replace Alonso, but couldn't play until around December. By which time LFC were well off the pace in the PL and ultimately failed to qualify for the CL. Not only did LFC waste a lot of money on his signings, but failing to properly replace Alonso cost them a CL spot that they are still struggling to reclaim. Potentially the signing has cost them more than the 80m paid for Ronaldo and the effects will be felt for years if not decades.

I agree - I remember watching Robinho's debut (at least I think anyway).
Didn't he crash a free kick in?
You could feel the excitement around the ground at that point, even on the TV.
Definitely a statement of intent, and one that had the desired effect in my opinion. (unfortunately )
yeah he did to put us 1 up, plus there is nothing more exciting than when it was announced on ssn we had signed him,
worth the 12m loss for that feeling alone
Winston,
I suppose you do, I bet Fergie certainly did. He must have raised a glass of vintage red to Souness. Beat us to Pallister and a little further down the line watch us replace Hansen with Picnic.
I'll never forget us playing at Goodison and he had an absolute mare couldn't put his foot on the ball, then to compound matters Beardsley scored the winner late on. Like you say you have to laugh.
Aquliani was an excellent player, terrible business in the end. Homesick, crocked for months longer than the medical said he would be then not in the future managers plans and loaned off.
Shame. Loads of skill.
The Galloping Major (U7010)
To be fair, I look back and laugh at some of the players who have strolled out at OT.
That sense of expectation, and as the season goes on you realise SAF has signed a duffer.
One thing that always amazes me is that once a player has played for Man Utd, he can always find a club willing to sign him, no matter how bad he is.
Winston,
I remember when you signed Ralph Milne only a few years earlier than the Souness splurge and he took some stick, it happens. Sadly for us it began to happen with alarming regularity.
Rough with the smooth and to be fair we've both had our fair share of both. As you say though Fergie usually gets rid quick although poor Ralph must have had a sore a rse for a while!
The Galloping Major (U7010)
Indeed, I think Ralph is now in OT folklore, for all the wrong reasons!
Robbie Keane to Inter Milan?
when kaka gets sold it's going to shatter all the records for losses
How much was Kaka? I thought he cost 48M?
Francis jeffers to arsenal 10mil
I thought it was 68mil Euros
not sure what that translates to

difference between worst value and just worst player
for example, Winston Bogarde was a worse signing than Torres could ever hope to be
I thought it was 68mil Euros
not sure what that translates to

57M pounds but the currency rate has changed since.
I would say Kaka was the worst biggest signing ever, more so than even Torres.
Do you remember Bosko Balaban?
Around the £6m mark and never scored a goal for Villa.
That must take some beating.
