Easily..

I'd like it, but it throws up some problems.

A) Why just Rangers and Celtic, can't open doors to all clubs.

B) What happens with PL Champion's League spots? Do we get another now we have two more power houses? Or will St. Johnstone be playing Barca next year?

Etc.

Rangers?

Why would we contemplate letting a third division Scottish team in out leage?

Personally I wouldn't have any of them. English league for English clubs

Would you have see a Portuguese team in la liga because its next to Spain? I don't think so.

They have their own countries league. It's not our fault they are bored.

Well it would take a lot of time, but Celtic have a capacity of stadium of 60k, pretty much the same as Arsenal. So in theory with the more financial backing in England, more global appeal from being in England, after a bit of time theres no reason why Celtic can't be in the top 10.

As far as Rangers is concerned, they have a ground roughly 50k i think, but they are still recovering from their meltdown.

I am favour of a move as it would be good for the Old Firm, but Scottish leagues would suffer dramatically

Like Wales and England

I think the only way for it to work would for there to be a UK league..

Which i can never see happening..

The UK league would have to wait until after the result of the Scottish Referendum.

So you think Swansea and Cardiff shouldn't be allowed? I think the comparison between Spain and Portugal are a bit off the mark as Scotland, Wales and England are all in the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal have no affiliation what so ever other than the fact they are next to each other.

Don't agree with that either. Swansea and Cardiff shouldn't play in England but tht is what it is.

You lot should stay in Scotland and play there.

As for how they would do. No better than top 8 after 5 years. Having a 60k stadium doesn't mean a whole lot tbf.

Personally would love Celtic being in the Prem actually, so i can go across the city to watch them pump our rivals

Not off at all. We are 3 separate countries are we not? Hence why we have separate football teams etc.

i dont think so, they have their own league.

welsh teams dont, therefore if they get in the PL they deserve it, if rangers or celtic get in, its because theyve been hand picked.

But their clubs play in your league

There is a Welsh league isn't there?

As I say that is what it is. They are already here. You lot have a strong enough league in your own country. You can't just pack up and come to the pl.

Rangers even more so. It would be a disgrace to let them in.

I'd like the idea of Rangers and Celtic in the PL, if only to remind them what it's like to play in a real League!

posted on 23/1/13

Yea there is a welsh team with teams like TNS, pretty bad though

league*

Don't have a problem with them playing in our League but you have to earn the right to reach the PL.

Start at the bottom like every other club has to

This topic rears its ugly head every so often. What are the reasons for Celtic and Rangers continually wanting to come and play football in England? Better quality opposition? A sense of loathing for other Scottish teams? Or a really big pot of TV money?

Its a bit strange that the Scottish government try to distance themselves as far away from the English as possible, whilst their premier football clubs are trying to get as close as possible.

I'm pretty sure if English football was much poorer financially the 'big 2' in Scotland wouldn't ever consider it. Its all to do with finances. Maybe the best bet for Celtic and Rangers would be to look into joining Spain's La Liga. They would be able to negotiate their own TV deals like Barca and Real, and with such big fanbases they have, this would be their best bet financially.

Barf Vader

I think its obvious.. Quite clearly the pot of money..

Having said that, i think the erse will collapse out the english game soon and i dont really know how you guys will cope with that

From a footballing perspective Celtic will win the SPL every season, and win the majority of the cups bar the odd giant killing. All they are doing is waiting for Rangers to grow back again to challenge. Charles Green doesn't even want Rangers in the SPL due to this new proposed restructuring.

Of course its for more money, but its also a new challenge.

Don't know about Rangers but Celtic certainly have a lot of support further afield than Glasgow and Ireland you know - Not on the scale of United but I would imagine that being in the English Prem would open a lot more doors to exploit the business opportunities abroad that they can't to such an extent from the Scottish League.

I think you are underestimating the kind of value they would add to the league. If you think about it the kind of sponsorship deals and the kinds of companies you can attract with that many gates and overseas fans would expand exponentially. Earning more for the TV deal and the prize money on offer would certainly improve the playing personel they could attract on a longer term basis.

As a general point I agree the Scottish League would suffer greatly as a result. It's one of the reasons they have 4 games against each team.

On a seperate note it would probably give FIFA a huge impetous to remove the 4 home nations from the law making committee and give the UK just one space out of 8. This would lose us the veto rights we currently have but also provides Septic Blatter and his cronies more opportunities to collect brown envelopes filled with benjamins!

Overall I would say I am against it, not least because Rangers are currently still on the road to recovery as it is, but historically they are apart for a reason and I see no compelling evidence to see this change. As someone else has already pointed out there isn't a case for football union when Scotland are on the verge of deciding whether they want to remain in political union.

I don't think this is destined to happen. It could only happen if a significant number of clubs voted against their interests. How many lower end Premiership club will vote to have one fewer place in the league? How many clubs in contention for European places will want potentially powerful competitors for them? (Would today's Arsenal side be keen to have a cash-boosted Celtic going full steam for the top four?)

It would increase the number of mouth-watering matches in the Premiership and increase its claim to be the best 'product' out there but I don't see the constituent members opting for it. More likely that the elite English clubs and Old Firm will break away altogether at some point to create a European super league.

Another thought. Obviously, the Old Firm enjoy support comparable to the biggest handful of clubs in England. I wonder what would happen to that if they 'left Scotland'. Would there be a backlash among some of the fans? Or does club loyalty, the growth potential and the pisspoor nature of the SPL mean that most fans would embrace it?
