Carrick is good, and improving with age. He's not near the bracket of the top players in the world and never was.

A good player, not great and certainly not world class. Lets face it, you can count the number if stand out performances on a hand, possibly two. A couple of games vs Chelsea and Roma spring to mind, these performances show he really doesn't reach his potential often enough.

That's one example. There's also Roma at home. Inter Milan away in 2009. Bayern Munich away in 2010. Real Madrid away last season in addition to the many games in England he has been sensational in.

But yes, there's no way he can be as good as Cleverson were against a couple of very poor sides in 2011

Exactly. Funny enough, another play who never matched his full potential no thanks to fergie converting him to a holding midfielder.

Carrick is akin to a CB.

In a team that usually attacks, he won't get noticed for stand-out performances.

Valdes, Puyol and Pique and even Busquets are massively underrated by some because the TV isn't on them much.

Carrick certainly fits into that category.
