Football games will always miss out as they split decision s

posted on 15/12/13

I don't think football games deserve to be up there with the best, as they've been the same for decades, and never really have anything unique/special about them. I doubt that will change either, because it's such a tried and tested formula that generates loads of profit, it would be foolish to try and take the games in a different direction.

The quality in them is the pick up and play value which COD has in bundles! While not ground breaking it is still one of the biggest grossing games every year.

Very similar could be said of the WWE series as well.

May look to buy skyrim on the cheap as I was travelling when it came out so never played it

Counterstrike on the pc set the standard for multiplayer fps shooters.
quake 3 was good too.

I'd also put the other two mass effect games on the list, all 3 were awesome.
Arkham asylum
GTA 4 was gash.

I am still yet to play skyrim, is it worth the amount of hours you have to put into it?
halo 3 was amazing.
gears of war.
Dues ex human revolution isn't that well known but is a fantastic game.

COD is the franchise which has succeeded the most in this generation.

GTAV and FIFA still appeal to the masses, but they did so in the PS2 and XBOX days too, so for me I'd say FIFA and GTA defined the previous gen (even though they are still massively relevant today, and continue to be some of the most successful franchises).

COD however was another WW2 standard shooter that didn't have a large fanbase during the PS2 etc. days.

On PS3 and 360 it added something revolutionary, it made jumping into a game with your friends or people on the other side of the planet something that took 30 seconds, and an online ranking system that kept people hooked (also nearly every other franchise uses this online format, ranking up with unlocks).

A yearly release that makes hundreds and hundreds of millions, with the biggest gaming fanbase on the planet probably.

Yeah, as much as we all hate the current COD's and their yearly releases, no other game has come close to growing and expanding as much and as quickly as COD has in the past 6 years or so.

COD Modern Warfare 1 is one of the best FPS shooters ever, and I loved it (black ops 1 was great too), so for me this generation will be remembered as the COD generation more so than TES or GTA or FIFA

The hours of content in it are what make it great, like in all Bethesda games.

Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy

Got to have a few Wii games I guess

Fair point Marco, the Wii shouldn't be dismissed.

Wii Sports was a defining game of the generation. I personally think motion control was a fad that is now passing but it opened the video game market up to a whole new audience who would never have previously considered getting a video games console.
The game itself isn't that brilliant once you figure it out (I've bowled multiple perfect games on the bowling for example, in real life I'm no where near that good) but I still enjoy a round of golf every now and then.

Also think the Assassins Creed series should be mentioned. First game is admittedly average and AC3 is awful but the Ezio trilogy was superb, great gameplay with a compelling story. (I haven't played Black Flag yet)

Heavy Rain, a game that was always going to divide opinion but took games in an entirely new direction, giving the player real control over the story in the game.

One of the things I have noticed about this generation is the way in which story has taken a greater precedence in gaming.
The fall out from Mass Effect 3 illustrates this perfectly. In days gone by, all gamers would get is a congratulations screen and that was sufficient. When ME3 came out, gamers were seriously p'ssed at getting a lacklustre ending to what had been an epic story to that point.
Games are no longer just about going from point A to point B but your motivations for getting there.

Out of the games I've played:

COD 4
The Last of Us
Uncharted 2
Batman Arkham City
AC II

Haven't played Mass Effect 2, Bioshock or the new GTA but I imagine a lot of people will rank them among the best as well.

Absolutely. You don't HAVE to put the hours in, it just sort of happens. Skyrim is my PS3-defining game without doubt.

The Last Of Us is great

posted on 15/12/13

Honestly if you can put up with Japanese voices & English text then play Yakuza 3 & 4 .,it's a great Beat em up story game that doesn't take itself too seriously with the Yakuza aspect & has a lot of replayability & content
