"There were definite boos when the plane went overhead - fans in the Stretford End were then applauding in unison and to me that is a signal of support for the manager. It seems to have triggered support for David Moyes."

No surprise really. Most mature fans would see it as a cheap shot.

From what I've heard It didnt totally backfired as moyes loving media wants us to believe, Some at OT bood and sang for moyes but vast majority was quite and didnt participate in booing or singing Moyes's name. Since the msg from most parties involved with the club is to boo the plane and support Moyes, The fact that most didnt participate in either could be interpreted as most supporters in stadium not supporting moyes.

All in all, it is a good thing to pull a stunt like that imo, As long as Moyes is supported by the fans, he will remain at the job. Glazzers wont intervene unless they are absolutely certain that majority of fans want him gone. So planes, banners, protests, waving handkerchiefs, whatever that could be done, should be done in order to get the msg across imo, If most supporters wants him gone before the summer transfer window, they should make their voices heard

I wasnt at the match so don't know for sure, but they said on the radio that only the Stretty could see the plane. So most of the stadium didnt have the opportunity to react.
