Well what makes Gerrard world class is his ability to play pretty much every position for club and country.
If you can find me another footballer who can play RB, DM, CM, AM, RWF, LWF and SS at a high level I'll give you a.
There are better CM's, there are better wingers, there are better SS's but there are no more complete footballers than Steven Gerrard.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
John O'shea. And he played in goal too...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul Scharner played every outfield position except right back, I believe. That doesn't mean he was world class. As for complete footballers, currently I reckon Vidal would probably be capable of playing in practically every position at the highest level - he's one of the most complete footballers I can remember.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Obvious to who?
Shrek is a good player but he's not a top, top player like Gerrard.
.............
Oh dear, what a plum.
IMO to be considered world class a player would be “expected” to get into any team in the world.
On occasion maybe Rooney would fall into that bracket however the Ballon d'or, UEFA team of the season etc etc awards (historically) seem to suggest that Rooney is not quite on that level.
However does anyone really give any value to anything Barton says.

The term World is easily abused. A world class player is one that can easily replace a player that is currently in the World XI without causing too much imbalance. You can replace Vidal with Xavi in the World XI because he is world class. You can replace Suarez with Ibrahimovic because he is world class. The same with Kompany and Thiago Silva.
If a player has a moment of world class is now considered then there should be a new category called ELITE.

We know you are, you don't need to tell us.
Even Benitez knew Gerrard was not a good central midfielder that's why he played him as a winger and a supporting striker.
Gerrard won an FA cup final for his club and pushed hsi club to a the CL final, his ability to play in various positions was amply displayed with his WORLD CLASS performance at right back in the second half of the 2005 cl final, he scored the goal to make it 3-1. won the pen to make it 3-3 then went to right back and kept the second best team in Europe out for the rest of the game including extra time.
WORLD CLASS
Barton can say what he likes really, Rooney is still the best player the city of Liverpool has produced in the last 20 years, Barkley could go on to be better though
No offence but you have to either be incredibly one eyed or simply not know a lot about football to think that Steven Gerrard was not in the elite ranking of footballer in his prime.
Numerous professionals will back up this asscertion and only fools would argue otherwise. Ireally mean that. It's just stupid to suggest otherwise. From getting men of the final awards to being picked in team of the years, to getting 100 caps to wnning trophies.
It's just laughable to suggest otherwise.
Gerrard won the FA cup against West Hamm ffs.
The Milan game he took a dive to win a pen and Dudek won the game for you.
Is Dudek world class then?
Silly logic

But in the CL 2005 final, he was starting in CM. Was his performance in his primary position not a big reason why they were 3-0 down in the first place? Making no impression against the likes of Kaka, Seedorf, Gattusso and Pirlo?

Comments like this just emphasise how little you know about football.....
He's scored 214 goals for us and currently sits as United's 3rd all time leading scorer with every chance of becoming number 1 in a couple of years time.........
and he's not world class?
according to Joey Barton too.
Mudd has reeled in so many scousers
I listened to the interview and although I'm not surprised with the slant the papers have gone with it, I agreed with most things that Barton said in all honesty.

SE85, your statements are very true but what I think Barton is trying to say is that Rooney cannot be considered equal to the current crop of very top players. Its not to do with the records he will hopefully achieve with us.

Normally a World class player has his best position and would not be needed to cover other positions.
If there was a catagory for the best utility player of the last decade then Gerrard would get the vote.

If Rooney had world class players to play along side he'd be at that level, carryign united for a decade has taken it's toll on him.
.....
So he's not world class but he's carried a team to a shed load of trophies over 10 years. Great logic that
