I think we are seeing this season as well they are set up to play better when on the counter against the big teams. A draw is not a bad result.

Do we really expect such a weak squad against villa? Won't some players play villa then fly out? Haven't really looked at the fixtures, but you would think our second string plus some youth could handle The game here, and our first string and some youth could cover the cwc fixture

I remember reading that it was considered initially that some fringe players would stay back for the cup game then be flown out to Qatar afterwards but it was decided for some reason that wasn’t workable:

Klopp wants out of league cup. Last thing he wants is a 2 leg semi against Man U which means he will have to play a stronger team.
