Managing England is an extremely difficult job. The pressure is intense and the scrutiny is unrelenting.
That's not to say Southgate is a good manager. He is far too negative for my tastes and for the squad he has at his disposal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the Crux of the matter.
He's being extremely defensive with a squad loaded with attacking talent. Get at teams, we should be starting every game like Rodgers Liverpool, absoloutely blitz and press like mad for the first 15 minutes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely.
The conundrum he has is the defence
Does he go with a back four or revert to a back 3 because the cop batterer is out. If he's playing wing backs surely Trent has to go
Knowing Southgate he will choose a defensive option. When as you say, the players he has to choose from dictates an attacking outlook.
I have said it numerous times, you pick your squad and style based on your best players, which isn't our defence. I wouldn't want us to supplement our defence because of our issues with an extra body when that leaves us shorter in the area we are strongest in.

------------------------
Thing is though I don't see this much, if ever, in international football and certainly not for England so although it sounds great on paper it's not really the case.
Id say Southgate is more likely to get offered a job in the Prem now than before he started managing England which means he's probably done an okay job.
As said there really isn't much to suggest he's done much wrong.
I meant to add he has used a few different systems which means he is making use of the squad in different ways as well.
I'm all for experimentation really because players come and go at International level and it's changing all the time, but the most successful International sides play to the strengths of their strongest area.
Our squad now reminds me somewhat of 2010 Holland. Potentially ruthless going forward, but vulnerable at the back. Not an exact comparison however. But they played to the strengths of their attacking players and their best players and they made for a very successful 2010 World Cup campaign despite losing in the final

We did well and played two dm's to compensate for our defensive frailties at the back.

Southgate must have been reading this thread
Whats the bet he doesnt use him at all so wastes a potential preseason with us, genius from southgate if so
Southgate the Clown vindicated.. for now.
4 RB is still odd. He should be taking 3 of which one should be Trent.
I’m wondering if he’s planning on using him further forward?? Probably a bit too brave for Southgate to try but one of those things that could be seen as a tactical masterstroke...
Hopefully in midfield Term, as we look very light there.
Two friendlies to give it a test run.
I would play Walker as the RCB in a back three and Trent as the right wing back. Trent can push higher up the pitch and can win the game with 1 qualitty cross.
Walker is there to cover that side with his pace.
The other defenders are not good enough to play 4 at the back.

May be the way to go. Have Walker’s pace at centre back to attempt to save us from the inevitable Stones Fack ups.

100% this.

I have to say Trippier isn't a bad option on that side either. He had licence to push more forward under simeone and he did well in a league which is more tactically and is similar to international football.
I think cohesion is a very important thing in football and is the reason why Southgate will go for the tried and tested formation and players.

For some reason I thought I didn't see his name
Godfrey for Trippier maybe...other than that, the squad is about right if you ask me.
Raphinha: "I have many friends in both Man United & Liverpool. At #LFC there is Alisson who is from the South (Brazil) too, so is the same. There’s also Fabinho who shares agent with Firmino & I. Did you know Firmino was the first person to text me when I got here? Great friend."
