If you want to win anything you need to change your manager and stop playing players based on popularity (Gerrard). Even though we lost today, I'm sure we will be a great footballing nation in 8/10 years.

we have had plenty of good England managers over the last 20 years...
its the players that cant deliver
Down to grass roots coaching in England
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those managers, apart from McLaren and Taylor, took us to our level. Robson, Hoddle, Erikssen, Capello took is to where we are in world football; last 16, QFs, SF. We shouldn't really expect any more than that. Hodgson couldn't even get us out of the group stages.

Of course we do.
Very depressing I agree OP
You see all these teams that regularly surprise at the World Cup. USA have an awful team of individuals on paper, so do Costa Rica barring a couple. Why is it we always underperform, the expectations this time weren't high at all you would think it may have alleviated the pressure.
Why is it teams with much poorer teams always perform progress further than us. It's not that we don't have the players, we clearly have better players than these teams.

Tbf I think we played better than in 2010. We just had a tougher group this time
In 2010 we couldn't beat the US or Algeria and stumbled past Slovenia only then to be smashed by the old enemy
Still, we were miles off the pace again this time. I just can't remember any fight whatsoever, maybe aside from Rooney v Uruguay
Even that fell short
we think we do.. thats the problem

Wish I knew mate
Maybe our players just think they are better than they are
Case in point
Ross Barkley
Yes he's young but, what did he actually do?
Love Bradley. Looks like a player that will thrive in this league. Would love him at United.

Come on now let's not be silly.
Would Mostefa and Lacen get into the England midfield. How about Altidore instead of Rooney or Sturridge, or Yobo instead of Cahill, Navas instead of Hart??
You can out down the team as whole for their performances but individually we have better players than USA, Algeria, Coast Rica. Our problem was the manager who could get that team to perform.
Some of you completely overestimate your players and underestimate the rest of the worlds players. There's only so much room in the Prem. There are a lot of players around the world. You also have rules and incentives to buy English. So in the end a lot of players will not play in England but that doesn't mean they're awful. Maybe not as good but not awful.

Massive reason why I am a Rooney fan
You are right, we have better individuals but not a better team
Rooney is a team player. Some of our players are not
Although he was injured for thus WC, Walcott is a massive example. Ability as an individual, terrible as a team player.

No one said they were awful S&S. I'm not belittling those players. I'm just saying that we have good players who need to be managed better. Costa. Rica, USA, Algeria, Switzerland had a plan, implemented by their managers. It wasn't always great to watch but in a knock our tournament it works. People argue that we played better than we did in 2010 but where did it get us. Perhaps keeping it more solid and being a little more pragmatic in the group stages would have gotten us further in the tournament.
I just posted the comment where they were called awful.

Which is the managers fault. We have the good individuals, so it's the managers job to get them playing as a good team.
Besides I agree with most of you. Was just making a point towards the post which says they are awful.

I think we should have been more pragmatic - ironically something Hodgson has been so good at. He sold out and tried to get the popular vote by attempting to play a style of football people wanted, a style he wasn't comfortable implementing. We got caought between 2 stools. We lost defensive stability in favour of a more attacking approach which we couldn't really work out because its not in Hodgson's nature.
Overpaid primadonnas who lack the collective balls to cope with the pressure generated by a ravenous media, who perpetually overrate English players.

I think the fact that he played Gerrard there (who may have had a good season with Liverpool but they leaked goals), just shows that he isn't as good or as brave people think he is.
Take a look at the Dutch side. They are very adaptable and most of the players are making noise like they will give it all for their coach. How many in the England team will do that for Roy?
Sadly, England doesn't have any English coach that can inspire and be tactically competent at this level.
After the first game, I though Roy would use an extra man in the midfield (though Milner would come in). But then the issue with Rooney playing out left, Sturridge scoring, Sterling having a good game. All that came to nothing against Uruguay.
