This system doesn't work because it means no wingplay, no overlapping, and our CM simply isn't strong enough to compensate.

My god is it frustrating watching our defence. Blackett has the ball at half way line Di Maria free 15 yards in front of him, I know let's boot the ball aimlessly up the field.
We need a midfielder to dictate the tempo ala Scholes. Simple passes, dropping deep to give the defenders options and then playing forward passes.

Take RVP and Young off for Adnan and Anderson. Blackett to LB Adnan RM Di Maria LM Mata behind Rooney and Fletcher and Ando in the middle.
Give Fletch 10 minutes to actually do something. If he doesn't take him off too.

No link between defenders to the front men, need someone as somebody said earlier like Scholes willing to do the simple stuff, take passes play it forward to the more talented players. Hopefully Blind can do something like this.
Mata has largely been ineffective because Rooney is also operating in his space, this was part of the problem I felt would happen playing all of rrooney, mata and RVP centrally. Rooney showed some nice touches but has equally shown some terrible ones, very inconsistent. RVP looks rusty but he has still had the best chance this half. Great save from the keeper. I'm not sure about all these long balls from defence either.
