That Azpilicueta is keeping our brand new left back out of the side. I want to see the back four as follows

Azp Ivan Cahill and Luis

I just wish Bertrand had made the step up to our no.1 left back. If Azpilicueta is going to keep Luis out the side then we should just saved ourselves £16 and kept Bertrand.

This defence isnt going to perform as well as last season because we are playing a different style, this is connected to point one.

---------------------------

Exactly and I think that this is a point that many people don't appreciate.

We needed to become a more attacking side because we simply weren't good enough in attack and didn't score enough goals last season.

But in doing so of course it will mean that we're not going to be quite as tight in defence.

Having said that I think that our defence will improve and adapt to the team's more attacking style this season. It's merely a tweaking process and it doesn't worry me in the slightest.

Also that game at Goodison was just one of those high scoring, high tempered games with both sides going for it.

If you exclude that difficult away game at Goodison we've conceded 3 goals in 3 games which is nothing to worry about at all.

I think people are looking too much into the goals conceded thing while not appreciating the fact that we've blown teams out of the water so far this season.

If that stops happening and we're still conceding goals then we can get worried. Until then its a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

It's a long old season so Luis will definitely get his chance and will get game time in the various competitions.

Having said that I also wanted to keep Bertrand.

I don't think people are worried about the goals conceded, I posted an article after the Swansea game basically asking should we be concerned but no I don't think we should.

we dont seem to be exposed down the wings at least. Its down the centre we look vunerable. Does Terry's shaky form worry you at all?

Personally, I think Ivan should partner cahill in centre of defence. I also hate the fact we have an easy draw in the Champions League. Nothing is easy.

It will give us a good chance to play around with where to play Fab (in my opinion the critical decision) if we can get 9 points up in the first 3 games

I will take your word for it, never paid much attention to him before but in pre season I was not overly impressed, not saying he was bad, just that he didn't stand out, and I expected him to. On the plus side Dave makes a pretty good left back for a right back, but then I mostly played left back and I was not naturally left sided.

We have conceded 6 in 4 and the defence looks slow, I think there was a bit of communication breakdown on the first Swansea goal too so either Courtois isn’t vocal enough on Terry is slacking.
------------------

Azpi is the one who should have been calling for JT to leave it not Courtois.

Teams that attack more will always be more vulnerable.Conceeding a goal when you have a 4-1 lead and are looking for 5 really isn't anything to be worries about as is conceding a 3rd when you're going for your 6th.

I don't really have any complaints as such but do have s couple of observations-

The midfield debate for me is all about who we are playing against.

For weaker teams Cesc and Matic are sufficient. Against teams like Everton I think Ramires and Matic with cesc at number 10 but for the really tough games I suggest Mikel and Matic with an attacking 3 of Ramires/Willian, Cesc and Hazard. Thats the perfect blend of resilience with attacking intent for me.

As for Luis, I also really want him to play more but Jose sees Ivan as the perfect 'out' ball and a good way to progress quickly from the back.

It sounds bad but we almost have too many quality players. I really want to see more of Zouma, Cech, Willian, Remy etc but there just isn't enough games... yet!

I agree except we had only scored 4 when we conceded Evertons 3rd. Could easily have gone against us that one had we not scored so quickly in response

Im actually not too worried about the calls in our defence. I just wanted to get 'communication breakdown' in there

1. When we start with Fab and Matic in the midfield two the defense becomes exposed as Fabregas drifts out of position (as is his offensive style) and Matic is isolated, especially against packed midfields and wingers that cut inside. Ramires has been the key to fixing this when it is causing us real problems. Rami though can be a threat to our ball possession with his touch, passing and shooting, but I don’t wish to ramble on about this first point. Next.

2. We have conceded 6 in 4 and the defence looks slow, I think there was a bit of communication breakdown on the first Swansea goal too so either Courtois isn’t vocal enough on Terry is slacking. This defence isnt going to perform as well as last season because we are playing a different style, this is connected to point one.

3. Hazard needs protection he is getting kicked more than ever; he needs to be saved or he’ll be trampled underfoot, so to speak. Costa can do this but i would rather he focus on scoring.
---------------------------------------------------
agree 100% with these first three points..

Point 4 is true sometimes but not every time for example Everton away,,,

I don't think we will be good enough against the really top teams in the CL simply because we will let in too many goals.

Hopefully we may just get away with in the PL, but we could be taken apart agst City and I just hope Jose gets his tactics right like he did last season when we played them in the league......we won't outscore City because they have a much better defense than we do, so we need to dominate midfield, even if that means sacrificing Fabregas.

posted on 17/9/14

The game on Sunday will be won or lost in central midfield, we cant let them get on top.

For this reason I would play Fabregas, Matic and Ramires.

we need that extra body in the middle.

We press high, our full backs push forward and 1 of our 2 CMs has the freedom to drift, it is inevitable we will not be rock solid defensively.

i gather you think the benefits of this outweight the negatives then?
