I do think someone was lining up transfers, early this summer.... Wouldn't be surprised if it were Fergie trying to push through the Shaw and Herrera deals.

I agree that Ed Woodward is pretty much a director of football without the actual title.

Really, i thought the traditional DoF was usually someone with decent football knowledge, a bridge between the manager and the board?

Woodward seems to be very much part of the board.

I think it needs to be someone who knows the premier league, definitely, someone with good experience. But also having had experience of European league as well and perhaps has been around the club before.

Step forward David Moyes

Yea, sorry.... I guess another "will we finish in the top 4" article would have been better.

City have a director of football, Chelsea clearly have people at the corporate level dictating some signings. Barca and Real have had this structure for years.

Seems like a worthy discussion to me.

That's the problem, he should be a part of the board, but he is also delving into the duties of the manager, or so it seems.

David Gill left everything to Fergie, he just advised who is realistic and how much they would cost. It seems Woodward actually discusses targets and what marketing value they have.

I think it will be a good idea. That role needs some continuity as I strongly doubt there would be any manager that will stay at Utd for more than 5 years these days

Iin his world we are all anti Christ because we critisise Louis Van Hoof!

In answer to your OP, we would do well to have one I think. Just need it to be someone who knows the club inside out.

Any chance of David Gill coming back?

Been saying this for a while, we need one a club of our stature. We cannot have our philosophy change with every manager coming in. Wanted one in before moyes, and to be honest for Fergie when he got to the point were he bought players he never used.

We need one to bring in talent that suits our ethos. Look at spurs, bayern, Barcelona, Chelsea all teams that go through managers yet seem to have the same type of players and style, the clubs style.

Right now, who knows what style of first football we have? We have a team that has Carrick and fellaini combined with DI Maria and Herrera, so what are we? High tempo or not? We signed falcao, a striker who is hopeless without decent supply from out wide and then have no decent supplier from the flanks. We have no guiding policy.

It is a necessity or else we will be rebuilding over and over every year and losing some of our most talented players every year because of the fickleness of a new manager.

Oh by the way WOODWARD IS NOT THE DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL!!! He should have no say on who we buy other than can we afford it.

Yea, this seems to be the benefit of a DoF, when the clubs change manager alot.

Our blueprint should be fast, strong counter attacking football. I don't think possession heavy football will ever dominate the PL.

United has always been that under fergie till after the CL era. I am thinking one of his players back then would do nicely. Tbh he is a bit raw/young but Giggs would be good one for me. He will gravitate to players of his style which tbh is what we need a bunch of in attacking positions. Sadly there is an economic part of the job.

City have done okay with it. At their best, I don't think anybody comes close.

Where in this article did the op criticise lvg? Everyday goes by and your idiot status just heightens.

As for the op, if we are going to go down this route of the blue print of this great club. Our most successful manager once said, ' the most important man at a football club should be the manager.' Directors of football many of times leads to issues in players that should/shouldn't be bought. LVG strikes me as a man who will not take any advice from a so called director. The man knows football, mark my words with the right personnel after this summer we will be challenging again. This knee jerk reaction is going way over the top. We are still fighting for top 4 ffs. Did people think it will be a breeze just because we went and splashed 60m on ADM?

It really depends on what our long term plan is. Are we going to change into a team who changes manager every 2 years? If so, yes we need one. This is the reason the likes of Real and Barca are able to maintain their success despite chopping managers regularly.

We didn't really need one under Fergie because we had continuity. Moyes was supposed to be here long term, so he didn't get one.

By most accounts, the plan atm is for Giggs to take over from LVG after his 3 years.

If LVG doesn't make it that far though, and it isn't looking good at the moment, then I think we need one for sure.

He also bought Ashley Young as giggs natural successor you ignoramus kaaant.

Are u blind or just plain thick to understand what the OP is saying?

We need to move with times. Otherwise no point in having all the financial and commercial clout because it'll be wasted if we stick with ur way if thinking.

If LVG knows football, explain why for a period of every game we resort to hoofball and why players are constantly played out of position?

Sorry OP. Just need to let the village idiot know a few things. Complete plank.

No, just clueless about Manchester United FC and how he should play players in their correct positions so we don't have to resort to such horrid tactics to sneak a win against the likes of Yeovil, Cambridge et al.

I think LVG woukd do well to have a DOF. Might make the 'transition' easier.
