A truly great player by all accounts. RIP.
POTY in both Scotland and England.
RIP
Blue.
He was of that army whose like will never be seen again.
The world has moved on and in most contexts for the better.
This guy and his peers were just 100% the Beautiful Game.
No court appearances, awkward interviews, incidents etc.
Just trained hard, played hard, and was a hard and fair manager.
Jimmy Greaves was on the radio last year.
He said that Mackay was the greatest ever Spurs player.

TMQ - take 5 pal.
A lot of the talk today, understandably, has been about his glory years with Hearts and Spurs. People tend to forget that he won the top English League as Derby captain in 71/72, then did likewise as manager with the Rams in 74/75
In all fairness to Mackay re the Bremner incident.
Billy was quite early in his career then and an annoying wee niggler.
He had been using 'gamesmanship' as it later came to be known.
Mackay was old school as can be seen in the historic picture.
'Cmere you ya wee prrick'.

Heard the story today that he's just came back from a 2nd leg break and wee Billy, the scamp, booted him hoping to test the knit....Hence the "c;mere you ya wee bollox" reaction
Was one guy I was glad of taking the trouble to see what he was all about. Epitome of a Scottish footballer. Graft and Guile. Smashing player, God rest his soul.
Just saw Greaves been mentioned and this is probably more interest to toiler than anyone else, Adam Rooneys Grandfather played alongside Jimmy Greaves. Hes a funny old bassa, nice guy great man for a few and a natter. Adams brother is supposedly the better player but couldn't be bothered, he plays semi pro here and regularly scores a schitload of goals when bothered. He works for his old man, Adams Dad who is worth quite a few quid. For any of you who watched love/hate Siobhans apartment is actually Adams bros

yir baws.
Mick.
Billy was a niggler in his youth.
Talented, but an an annoying 'click heels run away' sort.
He developed into a respected and tenacious heart on sleeve sportsman who gave as good as he got.
And didn't run away.
A subtle but important difference.

I think it's a mark of the man that he was considered a club legend at three different clubs. I'm not sure many others can say the same.
As for the photo, I was reading an interview with him from a couple of years ago and by all accounts he was quite embarassed by that picture because he thought it portrayed him as a bully when that's not how he wanted to be remembered. He said that after the game him and Bremner went to the nearest boozer and drank the night away and became firm friends on the back of it. Different times eh?
