Clearly an extreme case, but the issue here is Sterling's lack of professionalism.

Liverpool are well rid- especially at the price.

Clearly leaked by his agent.

Where sterling has had a transfer value put on him at £50m which :

City don't want to pay
Sterling wants to move

Any headline that could result in a negative impact on the transfer value will be to Sterlings benefit.

Makes you wonder if it wasn't the agent that leaked the first ones, which were in a private residence.

The newspapers hold on to these things for months and then release them when the timing is right for them

That's a very cynical viewpoint.

Journalism is a competitive industry- do you think all the newspapers would sit on this for months?

What could be the case is that it did happen a while ago but the person has decided not to leak it to the press until now for strategic purposes.

There's no anti-England bias as is suggested.

Marcelino, it's a fact they sit on these stories for months.

iron tulip I think you will find we have been linked with Ross Barkley for the past 12 months or more the same with Stones, so it would be nothing new. Martinez came out with the same rhetoric that rodgers is using 50 million etc etc some 6 months ago. Begs to wonder who was first between them.

No it is not a fact.

It is possible that the story itself took place weeks ago but that the person who is sending the video into the newspaper is waiting strategically to get a higher price.

It could also be possible that the person who has the footage is directly known to Sterling and the player himself or a representative has delayed the submission.

The Press do not sit on stories unless there's further investigating to be done or there's legal issues they need to get around.

Furthermore, "newspapers" is being thought of too much as a collective- they are different publications all competing with each other all trying to further their own interests.

Sports journalists don't all congregate in underground car-parks dreaming up Machiavellian schemes to fack up the transfer window.

So it is not a fact.

Or leaked by the club, to justify it when they flog him to City for less than their supposed asking price.

Interesting that with all the transfer speculation flying around at the moment there are only 3 firm bids that have been confirmed as rejected, and they all involve liverpool - two for sterling, and one bid for clyne - who do seem to have a nasty habit of conducting their player deals and contract negotiations through the press.

Marcelino, my apologies for using the collective term 'newspapers' to describe what some do. It is a fact that 'some' newspapers sit in stories before releasing them with maximum impact. For example a young England player might be about to make a debut and a newspaper will release a story about him they've had for months on the eve of his debut. It's happened a few times now and a few times too many to be considered a coincidence.

It's pretty naive to deny that some newspapers partake in this

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, how many 20 year olds do you know who are supposedly worth £40-50m?

It's not a question of the law, or morals, or being a role model, it's a question of whether you want a valuable commodity treating his body like that (albeit this appears to be a fairly harmless substance). Rooney wouldn't be breaking the law if he spent his summer eating deep fried pizza and luther burgers, but I doubt anyone at united would be too happy.

posted on 18/6/15

Do this really matter?

I assume that this was in his own time and not while he was warming up for LFC or England.

As for the kid who died inhaling laughing gas well yes it is sad but what about the thousands who die every year because of alcohol, cigs, fatty foods etc. Yet FIFA use Budweiser and McDonalds as brand partners.

Funny yes I suppose to have a dig at LFC but not really cause for concern in my book.

Laughing gas is harmless.

The faux outrage towards young footballers enjoying themselves or being true to themselves is an absolute joke.

That kid at Villa got torn apart for getting drunk on holiday. 364 days of the year these guys treat their bodies like temples, but one night out boozing on holiday and it's front page news.

I don't care what a footballer gets up to in his spare time, so long as he performs on the pitch.

how do you know it was one time? do you really think grealish is a saint 364 days of the year and just happened to get snapped the one time he got ratted? do you think every politician caught cheating on his wife got caught the first time they let their pants down?

it's not faux outrage, it's the fact that PL players these days are paid an average of £2m pa to play football, so the least you could ask of them is that they treat their bodies well all year round.

yep, if it really was a one-off for grealish fair enough, but do you honestly believe that? and when was jessica ennis last in the papers for drinking too much special brew? or andy murray on the front pages cracking open some poppers?

i do quite like that as a username actually...

but if my boss came to me tomorrow and said he would pay me £2m a year to be a top athlete, even I might lay off the crack pipe for a few years.
