The crime rate has not shot up at all. In fact it's going down. The only increase in crime is internet stuff.

Anyway take them in. 10 families per town is nothing, absolutely nothing, and I must admit the picture of the boy face down nearly made me cry.

Canada is huge and has about £40m people. Just sayin.

It was a heart breaking picture and the numbers involved are actually pretty small in comparison and I agree Robbing, their are several countries out their that could do much more to help than simply provide money. You would think wealthy Arab states would do more but they are happy to sit by and watch and in several cases, stoke hatred because of faith or the 'tribal' legacies that pervade that part of the planet.

There are two variables (well three really)

- What other countries do
- What our country can do
- What we ourselves can do

Now we cannot effect the first as we have no control over it directly.

Our country can do plenty. People saying this country is in a mess should ask the people drowning with their kids. It's not in a mess at all. It's a fine country with free education and health care ffs.

The last one is the most interesting. Individually we can do more. I know I could as I have a spare bedroom and money.

I doubt I will though for whatever reason.

Would happily be called a guardian reader than a daily mail reader ffs

Guardian, independent, telegraph etc at least make an attempt at educated journalism.

Daily mail comes under the category of magazines like the sun, Shout etc

You believe that if you want............... ALL papers have affiliations and own agenda. They all have "reporters" with their own stance and view on things - and rarely offer balance. That's as relevant in the "magazines" as you put them, as it is in the "intellectual" broadsheets.

Utter snobbery and stupidity to brand anyone based on what they read and choose to believe based on the paper they buy. ALL papers pump out a biased view, without exception.

I'd love to know what the Guardian and Independent's 'agenda' is.

The daily mail are the only one who constantly perpetrate myths based on hatred though.

Speaking of myths some of the comments here are delusional. The government has blinded many to the facts. Average people's welfare has gotten worse because of the greed and capatilist lust for growth. We have the means to improve our quality of life and take inany refugees, lets not forget our role in how their countries became so destabilized.

These people want nothing more than to work hard and live in safety. You think their risking their lives travelling on boats to pick up dole money?

But because others don't do anything, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't.

I wasn't suggesting we should do nothing but Europe should not stand alone.

It's laughable that Cameron says the solution is to stop it at its cause , yet he continues to do nothing of the sort and backs decisions which were the cause.

Sadly mate the health service is a mess and there aren't enough school places, GP's housing stock etc. - its a fact. I am not saying we shouldn't help these people we should. But having waited two years for an operation that was cancelled 4 times in succession due to a shortage of beds and my neighbour cannot get his youngest in to the same school as his brothers as we have had a 40% increase of pupils from around Europe in my area of London I think I'm on safe ground as far as facts are concerned. Don't get me wrong we should bend over backwards to help but there are clearly things we need to address. We could easily take in several thousand refugees if Europeans here under free movement regulations returned to their own homeland. Please don't think I am a little Englander, I'm not but surely it makes more sense to insist that we take no more Europeans without jobs to go to and insist that those without a job are immediately returned to free up resources for those in mortal peril. We cannot cope with both. And it seems ironic that Romania is shunting Syrians into train sidings while happily watching thousands of their own citizens scramble into the UK, France and Germany. It was a mess before the troubles created by ISIS appeared, it is catastrophic now.

I do hope that UK will do it's fair share of this European problem.
Just let me throw this question out :-
If the situation was reversed and hundreds of thousands of Brits had to leave the UK, would we get the same level of welcome and financial assistance in Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea (asuuming those countries were stable).
I am personally happy to help people if I think those people would do the same for me in the same situation.

Must be plenty of space in Russia.

They don`t like cold weather.

What I don`t get is if a lot of these are supposedly poor refugees fleeing to make a better life, is how come they are all walking about with mobile phones, and I saw one with a Real Madrid shirt on, now they don`t come cheap.

What an idiotic thing to post. The Syrian refugees have left their homes because of war. 4 million have fled their country. The war has allowed ISIS to flourish. Assad on one side - religious nutjobs on the other and rebels in the middle fighting both.

Do you think that this man stopped in Madrid to buy a shirt on the way here? Do you not think there is a possibility that the man owned the Madrid shirt when he lived in Syria. Is it not possible that this man had a home in Syria to hang his football shirts up when he wasn't wearing them?

They are fleeing to make a "better life" because they believe they will be killed in their home country.

Keep making assumptions. I don't get my opinions from newspapers, I seek out the pure facts and numbers. From my experience the like of the Guardian are FAR more likely to represent the facts. The DM is gossip.

The harder the country makes our healthcare professionals work then sooner they will think fack this and sod off elsewhere.

We fool ourselves thinking we have a democracy.

And the little boy that died, his father shoved them all on a boat cos he wanted free dental, nothing else.

The question to all the do gooders and ones calling Cameron a " distance" for his stance.... Would you put up a family of immigrants/ refugees in your home or back garden? As you are so for helping the thousands then why don't you put up a family and then surely you are helping the cause. My dad is Turkish Cypriot and half my family immigrated here in the 60s so I'm no right wing hater. But we as an island are over populated as it is. If we take thousands of refugees which is what the EU want us to take then we have to house them. I'm sorry but we have enough problems housing our own people as it is and people are finding it hard to buy property as it is and you want to make the situation worse? People need to understand we are a small island and not some huge country like France and Germany who have the space to take a few thousand in if need be. You open the floodgates for refugees to enter then it will just get worse and worse. It's tragic with that poor kid but the fact the EU are using this horrible incident on a pedestal to try and blackmail the Uk is enough reason to vote out when the referendum comes.
