Have to say Paul Scholes. Top player but very overrated and not deserving to be mentioned along true greats like Zidane and Gerrard.

You are trying to hard Mamba.

depends how you define overrated, by saying he's the greatest sportsman of all time then people are overrating him, he wasnt even the greatest boxer of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson was (just about anyone who is anyone in Boxing rates SRR as the GOAT) but Ali was almost certainly an all time top 10 pound for pound fighter
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Valid point, what separates Ali is he was the heavyweight champion, that probably means less today then it did in Ali's era, it's the greatest prize in sport and therefore a better boxer like Sugar Ray may not be classed at the greatest ever due to fighting in a lower weight class.

Ali was also never knocked out by the way.

..............

Cheating by his trainer made sure of that.

Ah the glove debacle in the Henry Cooper fight?

Pac fantastic fighter and a great record but don't think he was as good as everyone made out (just a tiny notch below Mayweather)

Rooney - Remember reading something on him a while back stating that for all his potential he should have been up there with the Ronaldo's of the football world, plus his international record (tournaments) leaves a lot to be desired.

Tim Henman and Rusedski - Cracking shout whoever put that.

Phil Taylor - One of the greatest sportsman ever pfffft nope, he throws darts and is a great darts player but even as a massive fan don't think he should be classed as a top class sportsman.

Sven Goran Eriksson - How does he keep getting managerial jobs.

I always thought Lennox Lewis was overrated, hid behind his decent jab and fought in a poor era.

To say Ali was overrated is nuts imo.

And smelling salts which was illegal at the time. Would Henry have knocked him out if Dundee had not cheated.

The fact that he felt he had to do everything possible to delay Clay from getting back out there tells the story.

Had Pac and FMJ fought when Pac was at his peak it could well have been a different story, I think Pac is one of the best fighters in years at throwing power punches from any angle moving in any direction and off either hand, he was the best in the world for a few years.

Phil Taylor is unrivaled in his field so can't really be overrated but I take your point about is darts a sport etc.

Agree. Not surprising Floyd and his team did all they could to delay it a number of years. If they fight 4/5 years ago, I fancy Pac wins it.

Taylor is fantastic in his chosen profession and should be lauded by the darting community, just not tauted as one of the greatest sportsmen ever.

The HW champ is still seen as the man today but due to the proliferation of belts would be seen as a better achievment in Ali's era.

Also the Ali/Cooper thing is a big myth, the actual extra time added was a whopping 6 seconds http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/16985467

its the most prestigious simply because its "the Heavyweight Championship of the World" but in terms of skill required to win it, its no easier or more difficult than winning the lightweight or welterweight title depending on the era

But the "greatest prize in sport"? It's just punching people and avoiding being punched. I don't get why it's held above other sports.

Nope, but there's lots of things I haven't tried but still enjoy watching someone else do.

I mean I can respect the guy who steps into the ring, on his own, as you say. But as a sporting spectacle it all rather leaves me cold. Punch, miss, punch, miss, punch, hit. Drink. Bleed.

The skill and athleticism involved is mental. and anyone that steps through them ropes should be held in high regard imo.

Well there's a bunch of reasons.

1) It takes years of dedication to even get a shot at the title
2) It's the purest form of combat sport there is
3) It brings out peoples primitive instincts when watching. We no longer have the colosseum for entertainment but it’s as (disappointingly) close as it gets
4) People put their bodies and reputations on the line

As a sport, it does make tennis players and footballers, even rugby players, look like wimps.

Referred to as the greatest prize I should have said, it's not going to be to someone who doesn't like Boxing. My point was it's seen as the biggest prize in boxing so can be a reason why Ali for example is seen as the greatest of all time when SSR was the better boxer but as he fought at a lower weight division he might not get the same recognition by people outside of the sport as he should.

I think today due to the lack of talent in the Heavy Weight division more people now recognize what goes on at lower weight with say Mayweather being an example of this as he's widely considered the best in the business.
