Recovering from injury

Swimming I guess low impact not fully weight bearing and works the muscle. Running/walking in water beneficial. Are you weight bearing or not?

How do you mean weight bearing? I'm wearing a heavy cast right now.

But yes, I was thinking that swimming would be the first thing to do. I have six weeks on crutches so will probably have to wait another month after that before any form of exercise, i think...

Sorry to hear about your injury Palmers. Sounds bloody awful. Wishing you a speedy recovery buddy.

Thanks mate

It hurt like fack at the time and I had to wait 90 minutes for paramedics to arrive with gas and air

Just looking if anyone had recovered from something similar. I probably should have posted this earlier this evening, think most have gone to bed now!

90 minutes? Wtf?

posted on 27/3/16

Main thing is to rest it as much as possible now, any impact however small will disrupt recovery, that break has to heal.

Only dietary thing to recommend is anything high calcium and vitamin D (I think)

The dislocation - how have they fixed that? Re-setting the joint?

Don't have any real tips unfortunately other than making sure you get the necessary rest and ensuring you don't try and 'force it'. A mate of mine did his cruciates a few years back and he was trying to over-exert himself which set back his recovery. Have to stick to the recovery plan unless your doctors says different.

Wish you a speedy recovery mate.

Hopefully you'll be off the crutches and able to stand on your own two feet to celebrate our title win in 6 weeks

In my day, Palmers, such recovery would consist of a lot of under water exercises

I am sure though a rest period is needed for the injury to heal up and then you can start the under water exercises.

I wouldn't rush into it mate. You don't want to aggravate it and make the recovery even longer

Just chill and it will get better

Good luck

I have to say I feel blessed when I got away with stud marks on both my chins and a cut on my knee, after over two decades of footy and considering I was hacked at almost at every game

Have seen them all though and some are down right nasty too

One of the ones that made me wince, was when this player had his big toe nail hacked-off and it ended up in his socks...loose

Good old days, when a good tackle is one that sends to the closest A&E

Hi Palmers

Sorry to hear about your injury.

Only thing you can do is rest the leg & follow any physio advice you are given. Trying to do too much too soon could set you back months, and even result in permanent damage.

It is what it is, different people recover in different times and you just have to accept that it could be several months before you are anywhere near 100%

Palmers that sounds like a nasty as Fack injury , I know it sounds mental but when you get the cast off soak your ankle in milk , the calcium will help it recover quicker .
Hope your okay mate

All I can say is I'm stillrecovering from a nasty ACL injury I got last January. I had the operation four weeks ago and haven't been able to play Football for fifteen months now. It's so frustrating.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Ren In the head

Yes mate they reset the dislocation soon after I was admitted to hospital but only after administering stronger pain killers.

Unfortunately there were no ambulances/paramedics available when first called, did the break around 8.30 and they turned up just after 10.

Cheers all

Yeah it was really painful. I'm not sure how \I'm going to go back to work yet and definitely not in tube rush hour!
I reckon I will just have to leave it till the minimum 6 weeks and try basic exercise when the cast and crutches are gone. Might try the milk thing as well.

Thank you

bloody hell edbo

why did you have to wait so long for the op?

It was my own fault really, I went to A&E after it happened and she was clueless. After about a month I could walk without a limp and assumed I'd recovered, but any time I then went to do exercise I either felt it go again, or it bloody killed afterwards.

It wasn't until about June last year that I actually went to the hospital again, then they insisted on a few months of physiotherapy before having the op, then I had to wait a few months for the op itself.

I've found you have to be quite relentless with the NHS to get stuff done if it's not an emergency operation.

Should've added that it wasn't until I revisited hospital and had an MRI last June that I was diagnosed with a torn ACL.

Boody hell. That sounds like such an ordeal you've gone through. That's pretty amateurish on their part tbf. Which hospital were you in?

Well the NHS staff were very good (apart from the wait for ambulance). I was discharged from North Middx yesterday.

Another think is that I have a ticket for a match at the Euros on 17th June. Do you reckon I'll be able to o to that?

It was done at Chase Farm in Enfield so local to you I assume? Where was yours?

Probably not what you wanna hear but I'm not sure you will be mate, I went to Villa away a couple of weeks ago and really struggled standing. When we scored I celebrated and aggravated it quite badly but then our injuries are different and I'm no doctor!

By the 17th June if you can't put equal weight on both legs then I think it'll be really uncomfortable for you, unless you can sit down and still see?

Hope you can make it though, it'd be a killer to miss that.

Would suggest you call the club & explain your circumstances, they might do something to facilitate access etc.

Incidentally I see arro has posted with some advice including ignoring the pain when trying to get back to fitness.

I would only ignore one thing........................arro!

He seems to be one of those peole who claim to have done everything better than anyone else & in terms of injuries too

Pain is the bodies way of telling you to stop & rest, not push yourself on. There is no guaranteed way of recovering except by resting and doing remedial exercises as advised by the physios.

The timescale is not always prescribable either. Different people recuperate faster than others, nearly always depending on their fitness etc.

Common symptoms of a broken leg include pain, tenderness, bruising and swelling. You can manage these symptoms by following PRICE—protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation.

The key is not to rush things & follow remedial advice closely.

Trying to put weight on your leg too soon can mean complications, so only do it under advice from a qualified practioner.

Good luck mate!

I was injured on the new powerleague pitches in Enfield and taken to North Mid.

I really want to go to France but of course I don't want to rick it getting worse. I will be on my own two feet without crutches for just over a month so will see.

I actually had an appointment at Moorfields eye hospital on Thursday morning for a pre-existing eye condition which I had to cancel as well.

Genius - just seen arro's post. I appreciate that even though I know he doesn't get on with many of the Spurs fans on here. I will comment in a short while.

Guess I will just have to relax and let nature take its course <

Thank you

Think you'll be alright for the game at the euros Palmers. That's about 11 weeks away. Obviously everybody recovers at a different pace but I'd imagine that barring a slow recovery you'll be fine by then.

Whilst you're injured, ensure you keep your spirits up! Don't get all downbeat and start eating loads of crap food. Whilst I wouldn't wish broken bones on anyone, it's probably one of the lesser injuries you could suffer I suspect? Things such as your ACL and spinal injuries are the really worrying ones (without trying to sound as if I'm trying to trivialise your predicament).

Got my fingers crossed for you mate

I did ask the consultant and he said I'd be ok for June. So not sure if he was trying to keep my spirits up of being serious. Hopefully the latter!

One thing I noticed, last night was the first night in my own bed and I found I wanted to move to my side a bit - pnly temporarily as I was getting cramp lying on my back
Is this a bad thing, i.e. should I be sleeping on my back all the time?
I've been told to keep my leg elevated...
