Is it only United...

Quite hard really as none of those big clubs in modern football would have sunk quite as low as united have.

If we saw Real finishing 7th and playing awful football I'm sure they would do something similar.

Also I know the official fee was £89m but it's common consensus United were willing to spend £100m+ (and most probably will with bonuses)

Yeah I think they have paid over £100m with the agent fee no? All very murky and we can only work off paper talk.

Good points, but this article is assuming the status quo for the big clubs. Would Real, in their current form, be willing to spend £100m+ if the player was right?

89 mill plus 20 mill for agent, insane for a player who hasnt proved anything yet.

If the player was right yeah I think so. I mean they did for Ronaldo (in terms of inflation it wouldn't be far off would it?) and near enough Bale.

I reckon they'd like Neymar or something just as a statement so we may see it but I think it would be when Ronaldo is done.

Real Madrid would. The only two clubs on the planet right now who would be willing to spend over 100m on a player is Real & United

I think he has proved a fair bit hasn't he?

I hate the fact we bought a player for so much money that we already had

Its a bit like Barcelona Messi going away and coming back to Barcelona for ridiculous fee.

So not City who are on course to spend £150m this window alone? City wouldn't spend £100m+ on the 'ideal player' they found in the market?

I think City would. Also very questionable as to whether Barca or Bayern would be able to as well. Chelsea with their current policy, no chance imo.

Didn't The Ibrahimovich to Barca deal equate to more than this deal?

Considering Juventus got him for free off United and are selling him to the same club for around £100 million then yes Man United are being taken for a mug and kudos to Juventus. Pogba is a good player but I don't think he is worth £50 million let alone £100 million. He is a poorer version of Vieira!

Deleting comments relating to Pogba because this article isn't about Pogba. It's whether another club would be willing to spend £100m+ on a player.

Can understand Utd spending that sort of money as the economics of a strong global brand struggling in the league may lead a loss of the foreign "plastic" fan that would be economically more damaging long term.

The EPL is so strong compared to most leagues, some top talent can be bought for much less. Signing a player for that much is always a huge gamble, but you can't underestimate the advantages of winning the EPL.

Depends where each club is at.If that 100 million pound player is the one to take their club up a notch (and the rest of the squad is set) then there is no reason to say City,Madrid,Barca and maybe Bayern wouldn't spend that money if they had it.

I don't think Bayern would. Just doesn't seem the way they operate.

Utd seem to be the new Real.

Obsessed with status and being seen to be the biggest club, at the (possible) expense of building teams.
