I defended him vigorously on the old 606.
Be curious to see who on here called him a crab. I have my suspicions as to who it was.
Brilliant player who IMO will go down as a united great. When you see who Keane could rely on every week it was either a very good player in Ince or Scholes
Carrick has rarely had a decent regular midfield partner and has had to carry the likes of Anderson, cleverley, old fletcher, Gibson, Old Giggs and many others over the past 10 years with his midfield partner sometimes changing on a weekly basis according to the whims of the manager.
To be as consistent as he has for most of those 10 years shows how brilliant he has been for us. IMO he's one of our top 3 midfielders to play for us in European competitions. Our fortunes changed for the better once he joined after about 6-7 years of being poor in Europe
Very good player but I think he's become somewhat overrate by a lot of people on here because it's the cool thing to do. I also think he's not great when pressed which is quite often and struggled a lot in bigger games.
It's weird because the plaudits on here have got better the worse he has become.
He used to get absolute pelters on here.

Is it not just possible that other people rate him differently than you do and "coolness" doesn't even cross their minds?
He received completely unfair dog's abuse about his passing on here from more than a handful of people for a long time. It's incredible to me that when a player's pattern of play changes, people automatically assume it's on a whim of the player, and never as a result of instruction from the manager. He certainly fell foul of that.
For me he's been a brilliant player for us, dependable, consistent and effective, particularly when deployed latterly in the deep-lying playmaker/shielding role.
He has a great range and accuracy in his passing, top drawer positional sense (particularly defensively), incredible footballing intelligence, is a calming influence when he's in the side and is an excellent role model for the youngsters coming through. It's just a shame we can't clone him.
I'll remember him as one of my favourite United players, full stop.
Great servant for the club, Agree with Robb that his influence in Europe for us was fantastic. SF, Winners, Finalist, QF, Finalist. My one criticism in Moyes' season, I felt as a player he should have been more of a leader as an established player to the rest of the team.
Trying to find his assist for a Giggs goal in the CL but no joy... anyone remember the game, Chelsea maybe?
* the point about Europe should read...in his peak years
Dunno why but seems like he's been here loads longer than 10 yrs
One of my favorite United players. When on form he's a very classy player to watch.

because the last 3 years felt like we were in a despair vortex that lasted a millennia.
probably
Great player for the club, I guess it's just part of our culture to not really appreciate a player like Carrick. While he clearly isn't entertaining to watch, at his peak he was still a great player who was a huge influence on our success the past decade.
I guess the goals against Roma stand out and also frustrate as it showed he has it in his locker to score such a goal yet rarely did.
Carrick's a brilliant player - one of my favourites and always has been. His forward passing through the lines and reading/positional sense is superb.
''I guess the goals against Roma stand out and also frustrate as it showed he has it in his locker to score such a goal yet rarely did.''
As has been repeated fabulous player but he frustrated me too as i felt he almost always played within himself and didn't always express himself as he could as he had the ability for sure.
Ofc, there were mitigating circumstances but i felt he could have done more to impose himself on games like the greats in his position e.g Alonso, Pirlo etc
The sad thing is a prime Carrick would be the perfect partner in our CM of today to sit behind Pogba
Yeah I feel he probably did hold back a bit but he was never going to be in Pirlos class. Still, great player though and I'm sure Jose still has him in mind. He's known to start seasons slowly so maybe Jose isn't rushing him.
That was magnificent assist.
Shame he didn't play these passes more often.
I've always felt he's a player who plays within himself too much. We saw a rare game where he bossed midfields both technically and physically. I remember one specifically he has Essien in his pocket.
He'll go down as a good player in a great team for me.
I wonder how much of that cautious nature was his style, or instructions from the manager?
When he was alongside Scholes, he may well have been instructed to get the ball across to him unless something obvious was on (which led to the crab nickname).
Though I agree that he never fully stepped up once Scholes moved on and Carrick became the main man in CM.
We'll never know Ji. My feeling is that it's in his nature to allow others to take the spotlight, I think that transferred onto the pitch to an extent.
However he will retire having won everything there is to win whilst being a mainstay in the first eleven. Hard to argue with that.
I just feel he could have been a 9/10 player on a more consistent basis, because I've seen him be the best player on the pitch, just not often enough for me.
Wasn't he a bit more offensive for both West Ham and Spurs? It seemed Ferguson has slightly different ideas for his use which worked out well but maybe needing a more disciplined player made him cautious and held back slightly?

Very possible
Carrick will always be someone who is rated higher by his teammates than a lot of the clubs supporters which tells the story really.
Fans are intelligent creatures but even the smartest ones are very capable of not quite understanding things for how they really are which I guess is why football is such a fascinating sport.
