"Fact is, most people haven't had a voice in politics for decades, now they're sick of it and the result is the opposition. Unfortunately they come in the shape of Brexit and Trump."
People have had a voice in politics for over 100 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really?
If you call choice voting for a government who then change everything about their original manifesto, continue to make life more and more difficult for the average person and selling off all the public assets, then okay.
At least American states have votes on laws that are passed, in the UK it's realistically a choice between two very liberal parties.
The reason Tump and Brexit won the votes, is not because we are nations of racists and homophobes. The reason is so many people are at the point in which they have so little to lose, they may as well vote for the people who offer something different.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you're right, I hope that is the outcome.
Whilst I don't think that everyone who supports them if racist or homopobic - you can't deny that to achieve their wins both Brexit and Trump have felt the need to appeal both of these marginalised groups, which in itself should concern those on both sides. But precious few on the 'right' are saying anything to attack these apparently unacceptables whilst moaning about being branded by it - or are we to deny their existence completely?

I’ve always struggled to understand why the UK’s relationship with the EU has been defined, (politically) left or right.
People voted (on both) sides for a host of different reasons. Many of which had nothing to do with political persuasion. Corbyn, (despite his public persona) is a Eurosceptic yet is to the left of UK politics. Theresa May, more centre right, was part of the Remain campaign.
Personally my choice was to remain, not because I have any great love for the EU. But because I recognised how significantly structured/tailored the UK (and in particular N Ireland’s) economy is with the EU's, and was (am) concerned about how much money I’ll have in my pocket.

Have the left destroyed debate?

Totally can't stand how these bloody cry-baby, pacifist, tree-hugging, bleeding-heart liberal twonts think they can speak so disparagingly about the rest of us. Of course they've killled debate.
Don't get why, if they don't like it, they don't just fack off out of my country and go and live in their North Korean paradise.
Fackers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't imagine why someone would ignore your opinions. Bizarre.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My favourite bit is where bleeding heart lefty is used as an insult to describe someone sympathetic to the plight of refugees.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The gist of my (sarcastic) comment was that the accusation levelled in the OP could just as well be levelled against the right.
There are factions on both sides who would be more than happy to shout down the other into silence and submission.
The only difference right now is that it's the far right that's on top. If it were the other way round, it would be them doing the bleating.
The people who mock compassion as some kind of character flaw say more about themselves than the people they hurl their disparaging remarks at.
"he people who kill debate are the centrist elite who do well out of the way things are and don't want to upset the apple cart. "
Scary thing is, we all know it, yet still put up with it.

Apologies for the error, I used EU, not EEA
Extracts
"When we do that, we see that between 1995-2011, on average each EEA immigrant put about £6,000 more into the public purse than they took out.
Non-EEA immigrants each took out about £21,000 more than they put in during that period."
"On average, each native Briton took out roughly £11,000 more than they put in between 1995-2011.
So to conclude, on average only Europeans are putting in more to the UK public purse than they're taking out. At least that was the case between 1995 and 2011."

I personally want every refugee from the Middle East to be resettled in all the constituencies and states in the UK and the USA who voted for intervention in the region.
Maybe in the future, they will weigh actions properly before they do them.
Im actually quite liberal - somewhere between lib dem and conservative in UK and pro Democrat in States.
However, I'm not set in stone and my views can change at different points in time depending on circumstances. I live by the comment of Keynes responding to people who tried to undermine his theory when he adapted it and said "when facts change I change my mind, what do you do?".
In the long run the US election is good for the US. I believe Michelle Obama has political ambition and will run and will be an ideal role model for my young daughter. If Hilary had got in Michelle would have been blocked for then next 8 years as Hilary would run for re-election. In 8 years time the US would have had almost 20 consecutive years of Democrats and this would have made it harder for Democrats to get in as many would say its time for a change. This result increases the chance of Michelle getting in in 4 years & finally giving us a female leader of the US (not that i think its that important as it makes no difference if its a man or woman but until we have a woman there ill always be a perception that women have no opportunity). Anyway I'd rather have Michelle than Hilary as the first leader of the US. A much better role model for my daughter.
UK is a different matter God knows where were heading - i voted remain and was pro remain until the next day when all my fellow remain snowflakes started throwing their toys out of the pram wanting to undermine democracy. Then i was all for brexit not becuase of the policies but because i don't support undermining a democratic process.

Rather than spell out (and in some instances educate) the electorate on how vital the EU has been to the UK economy, Remain offered doomsday scenarios of poverty and destitution.

It sounds as though Robb that you're referring to the Jonathan Pie video - he does comedy social commentary whilst pretending to be a disillusioned news reporter reconciling his real beliefs with the ones that he espouses 'on the job'.
I took his rant on the 'left' to be in reference more to the establishment 'left liberal' classes - the Guardian et al, who impose the limits on discourse and ensure debate stays within safe establishment parameters.
As far as I can see - and I've said this for years - the biggest hinderance to progress is the corporate media. Once we can abandon ourselves from it, we can move forward. I'd suggest reading Herman & Chomsky's work as essential reading, and then the best work of it's ilk on the British media is by Medialens.

Good post.
Whilst some of the noises coming from the Lib Dems and Labour are embarrassing, I agree that there at least should be some sort of due process. I.e. if the (final) deal with the EU is not in the UK’s economic interests, the electorate, or parliament should have the final say.
I believe DExEU are currently exploring (from a legal standpoint) the strength of A50, if there is an option to revoke should the UK find itself, ‘without a paddle.’
If you were about to jump out of a plane, and discovered the parachute was defective, it may be worth reconsidering the choice to jump!
