So none of Scholes' peers at the time could recognise that he was an elite level midfielder?
The point is Seedorf was considered an elite midfielder throughout his career whereas Scholes' reputation as an elite midfielder has come post-retirement

Well done for outing yourself as a know nothing.
Paul Scholes was every inch an elite midfielder.

It's interesting to point out that Scholes scored more than either Lampard and Gerrard in any one league season if you discount pens.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it?
Elite as in Xavi/Zidane/Iniesta levels

Yeah because Scholes is the one that isn't associated with goals compared to the other 2, yet is the one who had the most goals in open play in a season.
Well I was actually alive and yeah he was I reckon.
He absolutely excelled at passing and scoring goals.
There are some that will tell you Zidane was overrated as he didn't score many.
Paul Scholes was absolutely an elite goalscoring midfielder in one of the THE great midfields unfortunately.

Yeah he was. Anyway doesn't matter.

Why would you discount pens for though? It's irrelevant as they are a part of football.

Scholes never took them really, so it's comparing apples with oranges unless you discount them.
Also my uncle just posted a picture of him on FB with the man himself at Amsterdam Airport

Pens are gimmes to most players and Lampard and Gerrard took so many of them. I think it's worth adding them to the argument.
Both Lampard and Gerrard have had league campaigns where they've scored from 10 pens. Danny Welbeck still hasn't even scored that many in a season yet.

But if you discount them, you open a can of worms such as, looking at their team mates, managers, opposition they scored against, assists etc

There shouldn't really be much debate as to penalties being the easiest sorts of chances you can get to score from. I mean even with tap ins, the player will usually have had to run into the box or used good movement to get there.
Erm penalties are a skill.
I'd Hazard a guess no player in football has missed more penalties than Messi actually

Some can be. Otherwise it's just aiming for a corner of a goal from 12 yards away with just the goalkeeper to beat. Should be bread and butter to most. That's why players score more from them than miss.

It's well known he used to run out of gas late in the game and needed a quick pick-me-up. His choice of refuelling was cheesy Wotsits. You can clearly see a rogue cheesy Wotsit in the photo.

Nah sorry. Penalties are a skill for sure. I was terrible at them. Shearer nit so much. That's why teams have designated penalty takers.

Scholes was King in an era when mkst football fans this country were illiterate to what a player such as Scholes brings to a side.
Anyone who does not rate Scholes either did not watch him in his prime, or is a footballing ignoramus
Prime Scholes would waltz in to any XI in the division right now, bar none.

The pressure combined with technique is a demonstrable skill. Discounting them is daft.
Best player I've watched at Old Trafford in my lifetime, and I'm including Cantona, Robson, Keane, Beckham and Giggs in that, but that's just a personal opinion. Always had time on the ball, knew what he was going to do with it two steps ahead of anyone else, rarely misplaced a pass of any variety and got better as he got older. It's like supporters of other clubs rating Giles, Mackay, Souness, Brady, Bremner etc. - if you know your football they stand out a mile.
Couldn't tackle for shiiit mind.
