I did see an interesting comment on another site about Pep. That with the best squad in the league it’s easier to win a 38 game season but when it comes down to tactical match ups in cup knockout games he can come unstuck. Obviously he’s no fraud etc but tactically I think he’s weaker than some of his biggest fans will admit.

goes back to the whole lack of plan b or alternative way of playing

Rob, yeah I think that’s true.

Plus what it does show is just how hard it is to win the CL. So many of the games are decided on fine margins. We saw this for 20 years under Fergie, both when we won and lost.

Puts into perspective how remarkable Madrid’s achievement was to win four out of five.

Congratulations, Nick. Well played. You were actually deserved winners of the competition this season, unlike that travesty in 2012.

thank you. Both won on merit in different ways. But was good to win convincingly each round. Didn't leave it up to chance. unbelievable.

Got such a huge erection from Pep and Kun’s tears, and seeing that cuuunt Khaldoon handing out the medals topped the evening.

Think it was a concussion protocol.

Daz, I don't think there's a single simple explanation, but injuries were definitely not a problem when we annihilated them in 2014, nor could we call upon a mentality factor when they were reigning champions and we'd lost 3 semis on the trot (the second one against them). In fairness, Pep didn't really tinker with his line-up for that game either though.

Our finals record in the CL era is totally absurd though. 7-0!

ioag, yeah the Madrid game was quite clearly a major fack up to play such a suicidal high line against Madrid. But I vaguely remember them having some injury problems under Pep in the CL. The Atleti game I’ll never know how they lost that. Was like Chelsea in 2012.

There’s obviously plenty of factors. And Pep is obviously not all seeing and knowing, neither are his teams.

Not that you are saying this, but many people seem to want to place the winning and losing down to the tactical battle. When it’s far more than that.

Actually 2014 we caught them cold with two Ramos goals from set pieces early on. They didn't have much choice after that. Ramos had a spell where he was beastly in attack in big games - think he even scored a couple of decisive goals in the CWC.

For all the praise Atleti got in those years as underdogs, they had insane amounts of luck against Bayern and Barcelona in some of those ties. Never against Madrid though.

Yeah Ramos has come up with so many big goals for Madrid. You can’t legislate for stuff like, big set piece goals have decided the outcome of so many big knock out games over the years.

Even look at France. They wouldn’t have won two world cups without them.

posted on 30/5/21

Yeah. Not my favourite part of the game though. I so much prefer open play to set pieces.

just a thought about the upcoming euros

spain changing venue from bilbao to sevilla certainly could be a help

sevilla in summer is usually about 10-15(c) hotter than bilbao, and many (particularly northern european teams) will melt playing in 35(c) + temps in seville....it should certainly help spain a bit

posted on 30/5/21

You’ll have enough to get past Sweden, Poland and Slovakia wherever the venue, you’d think. But yeah could be a bit more of an advantage.
