What happened to their daughter is truly tragic, but no I don't actually. Their neglect caused her to be kidnapped (if we assume they weren't involved) so they should have been prosecuted.

Let's say someone drink drives with their wife in the car and hit a tree and kill her, is the fact said persons wife is dead punishment enough? Not for me it isn't and the principle applies.

No. The punishment should be more severe as their actions directly resulted in the death of someone, even if it wasn't intentional.

And yes, the same principle does apply..

The McCanns had social status that meant they'd never be treated like common criminals. The government response to their situation was of a ridiculous scale that you or I would never have received. The holes in their story (and the fact they changed key elements of their story) warranted a far greater depth of investigation, it was blatantly covered up. The money raised to support the search for Madeline had been misappropriated. The whole thing stinks.

I certainly do not believe they have been punished enough, because they have never been investigated to the extent they need to be to establish what, if any, punishment they deserve. Even if their version of events were true, their wilful and selfies neglect of their children resulted in the kidnap/murder of their daughter. Their grief is not justice for Madelines life, they should have been charged with and punished for gross child neglect and had their other children taken into custody until they could demonstrate parental competence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Add to this the fact they refused to answer any police questions after she disappeared.

They lost a child - the biggest punishment any parent can face. Obviously they also have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives.

No question they're paying for it by losing their child, but that's not the punishment for the neglect.

Basically saying that they'd be okay to do it again and again as long as she was never abducted.

She wasn't even the youngest one ffs. Ridiculous levels of selfishness and neglect to do what they did, and by let of the law it has technically gone 'unpunished' in a way that wouldn't be let left to slide had it happened to a couple of young parents from a council block.

The McCann case stinks of a cover up if you ask me.

I've not followed the case but it seems weird that he have never been formally investigated, or refused to fully cooperate.

Technically yes but they were sitting at a table only about 70 odd metres away and could see the apartment from where they sat. They obvious thought it was safe enough or they wouldn't have done it. It's easy to say it was neglect in hindsight but for me it was just a terrible mistake.
