I was addressing manfrom. We are on the same page with away goals.
Yay.
I think we should keep the away goals rule. Penalties is the worst way to decide a knockout game. I accept that penalties is a necessary evil. However any rule, like the away goals rule, that makes penalties less likely is a good thing. At least the away goals rule is based on both teams performance over the two games and not on a few minutes of spot kicks.

But both performances are the same.
At least penalty shootouts actually separate the teams.

I struggle to take you seriously after your comment on one team winning 5-0 and the other winning 1-0.
But anyway... My point is that the away goals rule favours the team that scores the most goals away from home. Which is generally considered to be the hardest fixture. Especially in Europe where you are often travelling hundreds of miles to an away fixture and facing an unfamiliar country and possibly a hostile crowd.
The hardest fixture actually tends to be the first. The winners of that tend to win the tie - irrespective of being home or away.
The fact is the first leg dictates what happens in the second.

I think we could go back and forth debating whether or not the first fixture is the hardest. I think it can be but not always. The first fixture may end in a draw. So the team who plays the first fixture at home has missed their chance to take a lead into the second leg. Making the second leg harder for them.
I just think any way of avoiding penalties by trying to get some measure of who has performed better over 180 minutes is best.

Perhaps my feelings towards penalties are coloured by the fact that the two teams I support, Spurs and England have an absolutely horrible record at them.
The team with the most Ls in their name should be given the win if the match ends in a draw

I was under the impression youbwere talking about games going to et in both situations.
But the point stands anyway, it depends on the team and flow of the game.
The idea that away goals or no away goals radically changes approaches in games across the board is something that isn’t really true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I was thinking out loud about the differences we would see in one "no away goals" world versus an "away goals" world and how the dynamics of a match could change in that instance.
Fair enough, still stand by my point.

take back what i said
He wasn't joking though...
I'm not a fan and haven't been since 14/15 when we drew 1-1 away to PSG and then 2-2 at Stamford Bridge and went out, I genuinely couldn't see how it was right that drawing 2 games = elimination/progression.
It takes away from the excitement too, IMO.
